So I open my X-mas presents!

I get BF2 and 2 Gigs of OCZ PC3200 C2 2-2-3-5 (one gig sticks) for xmas.

I pop in the OCZ and the computer is not stable.

So I move the sticks around etc with no luck.

Then I begin testing one stick at a time. 1st stick Passes Prime 95 for over 12 hours no issues. Next stick won't run Prime 95 for even 5 minutes and constantly re-boots.

So I put the Origional 512 MB Corsair in there and prepare to call OCZ.

but now my computer STILL won't boot up!

Something BAD had Happened.

Upon Further investigation I find that my AeroCool Fan Controller/ Card Reader is not working correctly. The Fan for the CPU is only spinning Just fast enough to keep the low RPM alarm from going off, about 1/8th of full speed, and the knob is cranked to the max. I verified that my fan controller is not workign correctly, although it was before I put in the new memory. (one of the channels works fine but the other does not!)

So I quickly switch it out for my old Vantec, and the Tt Smartfan 2 spins right back up to speed. but My Computer is no longer stable, think my CPU is toast...

Merry Christmas to me!

Still can't verify if the second stick of me memory is good or bad now...

FOr the memory issue, get some canned air and spray your ddr slots out really good.. then re-try your mems. For the other issues, I would check each of your electrical connectors and make sure they are all fastened properly! good luck.

For you memory issue, you should check both of your new sticks with memtest.. that'll tell you if the mem is fubared or not.. on the cpu.. no clue.. gl with it.. it sucks to have it happen..

I have done all of this other than the canned air, but the slots are not very dusty at all. I do NOT think this is the problem at all. I tried all 3 sticks in the same slot. 2 worked 1 did not, now non of them work in any slot.

I have reset the Cmos about 30 times in my testing.

Will Memtest Verify Memory integrity if the CPU is fried?

I disconnected all CD ROMS HD etc, and the thing will still constantly shut the monitor off then makes noises like it is rebooting, even just from the BIOS Screen (at least before I fixed the fan problem), but usualy it just hangs after the screen shuts off. And It is not a video card problem.

So Yea I petty much tested all the plugs and mem slots and different setting in bios and clearing CMOS about 30 times etc...

Try re-seating your main power lead to the motherboard. Make sure it's on and all the pins are in (none have been pushed back into the molex).

revenant, one step ahead of you :p Already tried this also.

After my Mom's Abit N-Force 2 died a few months ago I noticed the power plug going to the motherboard had burn marks on it, so I figured I would check mine.

Looks fine though.

I also noticed a few of the ends of the caps on the Motherboard are a bit swollen one looked like it was possibly leaking (had some brownish stuff on the end but I can't see any place it could leak from). But Then again I'm not so sure thats the issue, and since my fan controller malfunctioned while testing the second stick of OCZ, I have more tendency to believeit is due to the CPU being toast. That and the fact that I had 1.85 Volts going to my poor 1700+ for over 2.5 years.

I have NEVER killed a CPU before.

Too bad the Low RPM alarm did not go off on the fan controller...it was a couple RPM's above the mark where the alarm would sound to tell me I have a bad fan.

try waving some chicken bones over it while chanting "ooooo maaaa tech" ;)

Honestly there are so many things... but I have had ddr slots go bad from dust which I could not see, blowing them out worked for me that time... sounds like you might have a marginally bad mobo... maybe. whew. Good luck!

Whenever I can't nail down an obvious problem, it's usually PSU or Mobo. Your PSU should be damn near bulletproof, so I doubt that's it. Since your mobo has leaking or at least bulging caps, I would lean that way, but who knows for sure. Do you have anything around to use for testing/troubleshooting purposes?

Nope, I just decided to build a new PC, so I will be able to test the memory.

But I'm not sure how I will figure out if the MB or CP is bad, may just replace both and call it a day, or just guess which one is bad and find out the hard $$$ way, probably replace the MB first because that would leave more otions for A barton upgrade before I sell the PC.

I will try the chicken bone chant when I get home, or perhaps dropping the PC minus a few parts off the roof and see if it brakes enough to allow me to acess the memory slots easier.

I often blow ou the PC eith an air compressor, not sure I could get to the rear mem slots without removing all the components, HD's, Swiftech 462+, Cards etc to pull the MB...

A rather expensive solution, but what the hay, anything like this is a great excuse to upgrade, imo. lol. :D
