Some stores look like they are selling it, but nobody talks about it.

I have one and it works. I like it. I haven't done any benchmarks yet or anything.

Not many can afford a 500 gig drive. WD entered the market late and people who already have the 500 seagates or hitatchis are happy enough to not even bother with WD.

500GB HDDs still carry a price premium of about $100 over a pair of 250GB drives or a single 400GB drive. 500GB drives are very popular in enterprise storage scenarios, where the absolute highest giggage per cubic inch is mandatory, but most consumers don't really need the space and are unable/unwilling to back it up even if they do have it.

What happened to the WD though? I went to buy one and newegg and ZZF don't have them in stock. I have one now and really like it.

Zipzoomfly has them, and so does newegg. $300 though. Im wondering if I should opt for one of these or go for a 400gb for about $114 cheaper..

Hey guys.

Go grab one at Outpost or Frys right now for 229 w/ free ship.

Now that's a premium. . . but not too much!!!

link?

Hello.

They have bumped the price back up.

The Frys ad has it for this price all weekened though. Unfortunately, if you don't have a local Frys . . .

If you want one and don't have a Frys, watch the website. They like to play games with the prices. In addition, often the price changes when added to cart.

It still says 230 with free shipping for me. I ordered one earlier today.

I couldn't find a review on google...anybody got a link to a bench handy? If not, I'll bench it vs my 2500KS and Raptor when I get it next week.

Got mine from DHL today and I'm currently copying over 313GB off my array (so I can break it and throw those drives in my *nix box and install my DFI Ultra-D). Anybody still interested in seeing some benches? WD740GD Raptor vs 2xWD2500KS RAID0 vs WD5000KS

I'm currently in class until 9ish CST, but I can run a few benches when I get home if you guys want.

Im still interested in this drive, I've been vigoursly going over whether or not to get the WD4000KD or WD4000KS or WD40000 YR (for use in non-raid) or this drive, for sake of more space on a single drive...I have looked into getting 2x 250GB for 464GB of formatted space but Id rather have a single drive..This is for storage only.

instead of the 500 u should just get 2 250s and run in raid 0

much faster + cheaper

here are some specs for the WD2500KS in raid 0 using 2 disks on a sata150 controller

numbers are MB/sec

Here's HD Tach. Let me know if there's something else you want me to bench my new 500 giger with.

2x WD2500KS RAID0 on the nvidia SATA2 controller

All tested on the top rig in my sig.

depends. He stated he perfered a single drive, also stated it was just storage only. In that case it may have more than enough throughput he needs. And the raid 0 is 2x as likely to lose his data if a drive toasts out on him-

And you measured the seek times, right? HDTach doesn't even do this one right.

Not to mention, that's still a synthetic benchmark. Run some loading time benchmarks and see how it does.

I thought about doing the 2x 250 route, I already got two of them in there (1 ide and 1 sata) as well as 2x 120s ide. Soo....Im kinda running outta room (only a mid tower for now) and I don't wanna kill my powersupply with lots of drives..But still the question on which 400gb remains or get the 500gb..hmm

Any examples? Preferably something that times itself (not a stop watch lol). I can run some benchies between my drives tonight before I toss the array and install my DFI board.
