What gives more performance boost...gpu or mem overclock?

Just curious what would give more of a performance boost in games, an overclock of a vidcards memory or gpu? From what I understand, the memory bandwidth is more than sufficient to sustain the gpu, so, would you see relatively little gain overclocking the memory as opposed to the gpu?
 
It usually requires a mix of both as far as I know. I have done some experimenting with my 9700 Pro and keeping one value the same while bumping the other had done nothing in performnace boost. You always get the best boost when OCing them together.
 
well... i overclocked my lil bor's fx 5200... the stock was 250/405 i bumped the core to 290... i gained 4 fps in cs:s VST...i bumped the core to stock and the memory to 280... gained 10 whopping fps instantly.....but i am not saying that you will have the same result.. since the 5200 is a very downclocked card and starved memory clocks.. that's why it was such a huge bump.. but really.. overclock both since it will give you a more noticable gain :) gl
 
Overclocking memory will increase the fillrate.
Overclocking the GPU will increase the geometry processing and shading performance.
But in practice I think you'd rarely be limited by the shading performance (GeForce FX running PS2.0 excluded).

So in other words, if you're fillrate-limited, overclocking memory will boost your performance, if you're geometry-limited, overclocking your GPU will boost your performance.

Or, in yet other words...
If turning down the resolution gives little or no gain in framerate, you're geometry-limited, and you should overclock your GPU.
If turning down the resolution gives a lot of gain in framerate, you may want to overclock the memory, so the higher resolutions will run faster too.

Which means it depends on the software you're using... and if you overclock one thing, you may get limited by the other, so overclocking both is always the best bet.
 
I could've sworn increasing core clock was the one that increased fill rate :/. Afterall, it did increase when I unlocked the other 4 pixel pipelines.

Actually, overclockign the memory increases the memory bandwidth, and overclocking the GPU increases the fillrate. The CPU and GPU seem to give you a framerate boost depending on the games. I'm not really sure how the memory bandwidth comes into play. I do know that upping that speed can gain performance in added affects like AA/AF. It can help sustain the framerate.
