I have looked at this and I am wonder what folding and everything is, and how it works, and what you would use it for. Could anyone enlighten me?

Try reading this, it should answer part of your question.

It works by breaking the huge task of modleing protein folding into small chunks. Each computer participating downloads a small chunk of the whole problem, works on it for a couple days and sends the results back to the reasearchers. We would see no immediate "use" as such. However in time hopefully we will see new cures for diseases mentioned in the link above.

stickies are sticky for a reason -- moose forgot the rag.

that being said, FAH distributes the work of finding out how proteins fold to millions of Home PCs around the world in order to gain insights into things like cancer and alzheimer's research

translation: it uses your computer's SPARE (SPARE DAMNIT - AS IN NOT USED.) CPU cycles to help fight cancer.

go do it.
:)

I'm hoping that any information that they gain from F@H can be used to further the research about cancer and bad proteins that cause Alzheimers, leukemia(sp?), cancer of any form. I would like my life, and my kids lifes to be improved in the future by the possible release of new medicines that are the result of information that they learned from all of our cpu calculations and work units that we return. Fold on!

Thanks all for the repsonses, and I just saw the sticky, sorry  but I think I am going to help do this.

If you have any questions, or problems during setup, etc... Just start up a new thread here in DC with your problem and we will set you on the right path.

Welcome!

Welcome to the team, if you have any other items that the FAQ doesn't cover, you can also check here: http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=3 and take a peek through some of the guides that [H] member have come up with for installation/configuration/ and monitoring.
