Besides the looks (and I liked the looks) what's new on windows 10? Directx 12? What else?
 
Stupid pastel coloring :p

I would be happy if they did "modules" i.e you use the same windows version for awhile, say windows 7, then when they need to do a major release along comes 9 or 10, but, for the most part they can do incremental upgrades say for example the mentioned DX12 or performance enhancement pack for x price. I wouldn't mind paying say $40 for a "DLC" for windows every 6-9 months, but the way they seem to want to go, $100+ per year for a new version when they end up making your version obsolete with a version that really is not better then the old version which they can do via what I mentioned above, well that's a POS idea.

I think many business would agree as well, when you find something that works well for your needs, why do a full reinstall if not be forced into one, it is time consuming and a major pain in the arse, and hey I extremely liked the looks, UI, arrangement, general usability of Win xp and Win 7 looks .

I HATE the modern look and UI they have given every "new" MSFT product, over the last few years yuck. You see it everyday if it looks nasty it takes away from the "smooth" performance improvements. Generally you don't paint something awesome in crappy paint xd.

DX12, mixture of 7-8-9 performance improvements, retooling of specific "core" features and so forth.
 
The "modern" look in Windows Vista / 7 sucks.
It was very amateurish and ugly. Like, lets slap gloss on everything! Wheeeeee....no.
Plus Longhorn had a much prettier looking UI; Plex. Which was then brought to Windows XP in PlexRemix, so people who stuck with XP until they were forced to upgrade got to at least enjoy a better visual style than 7.

Truly 8 / 10 look much much better than Vista / 7.
 
hahaha, opinion. You like that childish pastel coloring and solid coloring that looks like it belongs on crayons Pimp?

TETO for me, I like Aero look used for win 7 any day of the week, remember when they brought this modern look even to outlook and Yahoo and thought to myself "WTF why did you change it, or at least not give the option to make transparent like in 7?" gross.

I am having problems adding win10 in a samba classic domain. 8.1 worked fine. They may have broke the 20+ year old nt3.x style domain possibly because samba now fully supports active directory.
 
I think a lot of their work has gone into moving stuff into "PC Settings" that is currently in Control Panel. Seems like much of the new Windows 10 features are based on "PC Settings" options.
 
Aero was always ugly. I'm not talking about the transparency mind you.
Metro isn't like, "pastel" either. It's matte. Do you glossy monitors, or matte monitors?
I only ever liked matte displays. Who wants plastic reflections and shine everywhere? It degrades the quality and it isn't professional.

It's the same thing in photographs, and my wedding ring.
Matte photos are better. Glossy photos aren't.
Polished metal is like a mirror, brushed metal is like a matte display. I like being able to look at the metal itself, so my ring is brushed titanium.

I think sticking things in PC Settings over including them in the control panel is a mistake.
It's still like things exist in a duality. Two different control panels in essence.
 
Unfortunately, it is not surprising that folks fail to read or totally ignore the original posters question and request. *sigh* :rolleyes: On the original topic: I could not say what specifically but it appears they did a lot of under the hood tweaking to make Windows 10 run faster than anything prior to it. I have installed it on 2 computers, both with hard drives, and it runs quite quickly on them both. (Not a clean OS install thing either.)

I am not noticing a speed improvement over 8.1
But, since I notice such a nice speed improvement from Windows 7, (in both 8.1 and 10's case) then I have to agree.

I am noticing a tremendous speed improvement over 8.1 on the core2 laptop with a 500 GB hybrid spinner but its not even remotely a fair comparison. I mean I have used the laptop with win8.1 for months and it had dozens of applications installed including Symantec Endpoint and windows 10 has none of this. The only application I installed so far is Firefox.

Loading it now. Here's what I'd *like*, but probably won't get. Minor things.

- Ability to tab the File Explorer (ie: multiple folders on one tab if you like)
- Workflow Desktops ---> IE: If I have Photoshop open, calculator open, and another app open, it'll save the program locations. Clicking this "workflow" will automatically open these apps and position them accordingly.
- Give us the proper backup tools taken out of 8.1
- When you open a font file (regardless if it's in a .zip), it should ask "Do you want to install this font?" .. the current having to unzip and drag and drop to the Fonts folder is annoying.
- 4 Way Window Snap that works with dual monitors. Windows 8.1 does Window Snap, but I can never get it work correctly on an extended desktop.

Although I use an addon that works most of the time (QtTabbar) it would definitely be nice to have this feature builtin to explorer.

I do miss the backup and recovery options that Windows 7 had.

I do a lot of design work, so it comes up on a daily basis. Either I'm handed a WIP design that has special fonts or I need a different type of font. The general user probably can go years without ever installing a font.

My backup font folder (archived fonts) is over 1 gig in size.
 
Right click on a supported font type and you'll have the option to install it. You can do this with a selection of multiple files as well.

On the core improvements side, I think all that has been confirmed is DX12 and DX11.3. Whether they will be backported has not been confirmed.

There was a personal blog post done by a MS engineer that talked about what they were working on a few months ago but it was pulled quickly after. You can probably find some of the details on winsupersite or all about microsoft. You can see in the preview, and the updates since that it's all is still a work in progress so obviously they aren't going to say much about what they have planned, in case it doesn't make it in the final bits.

Some of it is pretty good ideas like not requiring two factor authentication if your phone is close by and implementing containers for work files/programs to keep it separate from personal files and so forth. Will it be possible to set up Windows 10 with no Microsoft account, as is apparently possible with Windows 8.1?
