what dpi should I scan at?

I have tons of old family photos id love to scan, but what dpi do I use? and is there an OK way to clean the photo first so that it doesnt have water stains(surface only) or dust on it? thanks
 
You can wipe them with a microfiber cloth safely if they have dust or the like on them.

300dpi should be fine for scanning pictures that you don't want to blow up. If you use a higher resolution you will begin to pic up imperfections in the picture (or in my case, dust on your scanner... :p). Most scanners will have an option allowing you to specify what you are scanning and that will set the dpi to an appropriate level.
 
Remember that you can always shrink it later, if you need to. You can't make it bigger later. That's why I recommend scanning on as as high resolution as you can.
