I'm looking to spend about 100bucks on ram.
do you guys think i'd be better off with 1GB higher cas, or 512 lower latency?
I'm thinking about something like some PC3200 Corsair Value. Am I going to be able to o/c at all with that?

value select isn't really supposed to overclock...you can, but it doesn't perform as well as high performance RAM...

lower latencies always help..but then again it depends on what you're doing with your computer..for gaming and content creation stuff, you might be better off with a gig..for a little more than 100 (110ish) you can get 1GB of PC3200 Corsair Value Select RAM (512×2)

You can always overclock using a ram divider, just keep your eyes peeled for a deal. I would recommend getting two 512mb sticks for dual channel if your system supports it.(ethier buy two at once or get a kit)

But I think its HyperTransport Technology

yeah, it's hypertransport technology.

think of it as your 'fsb'. it's the base clock for everything in your system (minus the agp/pci on boards that are locked)
breakdown is this:

HTT * CPU multi = CPU speed (obviously )
HTT * HT multi = hypertransport link speed. this is the connection to the chipset. speed isn't really important here, as long as you don't go too much over 1ghz or under 600-700mhz. it's easy to keep it inbetween the two though


then, the difficult part, the memory clock speed..

CPU speed / memory divider = memory speed.

the memory divider is always an integer. at 1:1 it's whatever the cpu is rounded to the nearest integer (9.5 multi = 10 divider)
read the link in my sig for further detail on this.

^ that is EXACTLY the reason why I ditched my recent A64 (3200+ Winchester) setup. that crap was way too complicated for my butt.

I like things plain and simple and my P4 setup is just that. play with the FSB and the memory ratio and thats it. plain and simple unlike that AMD stuff that someone needs to read a three page article just to learn how to properly O/C the damn things.

aw, but what fun is that? i'm a tweaker. i like the challenge of getting my system to it's top speed. now that i've been doing it for a while, it's really not all that complicated.

when i went back to my old athlon-xp system at home over christmas break, i was very sad. i couldn't effectively use ram dividers cause it killed system performance. and i was limited to about 220mhz fsb. all i could do was change the cpu multi and fsb. too lame
