What does degauss do, physically?

Behind the glass part of your screen is a metal screen (shadow mask or aperture grill) that is subject to magnetic fields. Those fields can make your color appear pretty funky if they get strong enough.

Inside your monitor is a big coil of wire that surrounds the front of your screen. As a rule this coil gets a shot of AC voltage when you either turn on your monitor and or when you push the degauss button. That shot of voltage is usually 110 volts at 60 htz, in other words regular AC line voltage. The field that is momentarily generated at that moment is designed to remove any magnetic field residue that may have collected on the metal screen inside your CRT. The shake you see is from the 60 htz AC so it takes the screen a moment to stabilize.

A fun test is to hit it while your refresh is set to 60Hz and then try other refresh rates. You will notice the shaking is almost unnoticeable at 60 depending on the quality of the monitor but gets pretty gnarly the higher or lower you go from there.

The only reason other than quality of display electronics for the shake at 60Hz is the very very slight difference in the 60Hz from your mains and the 60Hz generated by your video card. Neither are perfectly 60Hz, but the mains are actually held to tolerances that are more strict than the clock of your vid card.

interesting .... so if the monitor automaticaly does this everytime it's turned on then
this feature is useless , we could just turn it off and then on instead of using
the degauss function , it can't be exactly the same ...

don't know anything about this just made a thought ....

LCDs have similar problems ? probably not ,right ? but some parts on LCDs are
also made of metal ...
 
No, god no.... that's the beauty of the LCD... getting rid of that all that metal behind the screen. LCDs operate by rising and falling pixels, which is why everyone wants a low response rate. Ghosting comes from when the pixels don't rise/fall fast enough and images become blurry.
