What does Antistopic Filtering Do?

I just wandered what difference does AF make, I know AA makes the Jaggies dissapear. Also on Nvidia cards what difference does the High qualtiy setting do over the Low quality setting thank you.
 
I like high quality for crispness with my gt and i beleave anistrophic is better for nvidia and trilinear is bad? :rolleyes:

I might have it mixed up or be completely wrong...
 
Anistropic filtering reduces the amount of fuzziness in textures that are "far away". It's like if you need glasses, everything close (or in focus near you) is nice and crisp, but when it's outside that field of vision, it's blurry. Well Anistropic filtering would be like glasses, so it brings sharpness all the way out to the edge of your field of vision.

You can also experience this by turning it on and off, and looking at textures which are "far away"
 
im think what it does is "smooth" the mip map transitions out better sort of like going from bilinear to trilinear

Trillinear filtering smoothes out the mip map and texture transition while bilinear has that banding effect. Anisotropic filtering pushes the view distance back on textures depending on the amount used, 16(2x), 32(4x), 64tap(8x) etc.. It pretty much adds detail more in your foreground and even a little in the backround depending on what level used.

and to answer your question about high quality mode, it disables all filtering optimizations for the highest quality images, with a performance hit
 
Okay, thanks everyone, I just didn't really notice a difference with or without them so I just left them on since AF has little to do with framerate in most of my games anyways.
