What does an external drive interface board actually do?

I'm sure theres more to it than just rewiring the HD connections to the appropriate connector on the case (firewire/USB). What does the interface board, the chips on there, specifically do? Do the chips simply employ the USB or firewire protocol or is there more to it.

i'm not 100% sure on this, but i'm pretty sure the interface board converts the 40 pin IDE connection to a 4 pin USB or 6 pin Firewire connection. i'm pretty sure this takes more than just connecting the right wires.
