Like this!!I just did it tonight since its been bugging me that I havent done it yet:) This is the chip in the sig.
Have a look.

Other than being able to shave with the reflection in your heat spreader, was it worth it? :D

Well it runs cooler and to do it the cost was under $5 so it was worth it.It took most of the sanding to get to the copper layer, after that to make it shine only took a few minutes.
My GPU is next;)

Damn... GET THE COOOOOOL... GET THE COOL SHOE SHINE DUN DUN DUN DUN.
(ADD + Shine = Gorillaz :()

Nice lapping job.

whoa thats nice man, how much did your temps drop. ii wouldnt mind lapping my 2.4C and my sp-94 for some lower temps. got a link to the tutorial you used? im scared to bend the pins also ;x

edit: just noticed we got pretty similar computers, besides some obvious things lol. you got AIM? :)

Just wondering? Is your sig big enough? 13 lines. wtf
Cant you make your sig any smaller?wtf
ANyways,Heres is a copy&paste of a how-to lapping. It does drop your temps and isnt hard to do.Dont worry about bending the pins,You just have to be careful and you dont have to apply all that much pressure.

I DIDNT WRIGHT THIS:

were all noobs...so no knocking them. Anyways, I wanted to add to that article because lapping, which is simliar to lathing is COMMON practice for me on all my Intel CPUs. I will explain why..

1. Lapping or sanding the CPU can greatly decrease heat when overclocking.

2. Lapping is relatively safe and if you have the correct sandpaper..its free..

3. I said its free and it reduces heat from the CPU. do I need to say more?

ok so heres the deal, this is what youll need and from here on, know that I am referring to INTEL cpus not AMDs...

1. A intel CPU socket 478 or 370 if your taking it old school style, preferably the socket 478

2. 220 grit & 600 grit, and if you can find some 1200 grit sandpaper, they cost about 1.69 US dollars for 6 sheets each pack, and you can get them at your local hardware store.

3. a neoprene foam piece large enough to cover the surface area of the gold pins on the back of the CPU, or a piece of foam that came with the CPU.

4. preferably a piece of glass at least 12 inches by 12 inches wide or a really flat surface, I mean really flat, not concrete flat lol.

5. any good tape, scotch, duct, you get the points

ok thats it, not much materials needed. Heres what to do.

1.Take the Neoprene foam or CPU protective foam, and gently place it on the back side of the CPU's gold pins, make sure that it covers the pins decently.

2. tape a full piece of the 220 grit sandpaper, and tape the edges of the sandpaper to the piece of glass.

3. place the glass on a flat surface, I use my granite kitchen countertop.

4. now take the CPU and gently move it in a circular motion on the sandpaper.

"NOw wait a sec, how do I know how much I should lapp this sucker before I ruin my CPU?"

thats easy, on the 370 chipset, you should NOT use the 220 grit sandpaper unless your hardcore, and is you do decide to use 220 gritt on the 370 chipset I wouldnt do it for more than a few rotations cause you have to remember you still have to hit it with the 600 grit in order to smooth out the visible scratches.

on the 478, use the 220 grit sand paper until the entire surface is copper, then stop and get ready to switch sandpaper.

If your hardcore like me, I go for quite a while, when I use this method, otherwise I will take the CPU and go get it lathed but thats a whole nother' story...

5. Once you reach the copper on the CPU take off the 220 grit sandpaper and switch it to the 600 grit, tape it down, and start going in circles again.

If you continously look at the surface of the CPU you will notice that the deeper looking scratches go away rather quickly and after a few minutes it will start to look smooooth..oh yah thats what we want.

6. Now if you went the extra method, getting the 1200 grit sandpaper, (this isnt neccessary at all ...just a perfectionist thing), then you will follow up with this last switch out of the sandpaper to the 1200 and move the CPU in circles again until you have a semi mirror finish.

now clean up your mess, make a double check to make sure that there is not metalllic dust on the gold pins from the sanding. ( I use a compressor or compressed air ( Dust off ) ).

7. clean the CPU with cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol nicely.

8. apply thermal compound and overclock that sucker.

only bad thing to this is...if your like me, which a lot of you are, I have more than 9 rigs, and I am constantly swapping out CPUS for newer ones or whatever...I sometimes forget which CPU is which because now there is no way to find out but to boot the CPU at default to figure out its real clock speed lol.

My latest experience, I took my new 3.0 800FSB CPU and did this to it, using artic silver III and a prometeia mach II unit I have overclocked it to 4.1 , idle temp is - 46 with load it is -38 -35, on a Abit IC7-G MAX II mobo vcore at 1.8, mem will not OC at all at this speed, neither will PCI or AGP slots, but man it is FAST... I can post pics if you guys want..more than glad too...

With Air cooling, on a volcano 7+ HSF , I lapped my 2.2A , I overclocked it to a nice 2.8 with vcore at 1.675, temps are 28C idle, and 34-36C loaded. using one vantec stealth intake and one vantec stealth exhuast....THE END

my setup hits 53c max@1.75volts and no lapping I dont think I want to void the warranty that way just for 2c

Thats nice of you to let us know that. Thats about 12c diffrence bye the way,Not 2c.

I was saying only 2c difference for lapping it there is no 12c advantage for lapping thats called bs

sharkdiver, awesome lapping. That's some dedication right there.

Next, you should lap you're entire case. I think that'd be sweet, especially if it's an all metal one. :)

Im not really sure what the difference in temps really are yet because I just did it but its more then 2c already and it will prob. be a bit cooler when the as5 cures. But heres the thing,Nobody cares if you are NOT going to lap yours because of your beloved waranty,I dont know if you notiiced but around here people tend to VOID there waranty as soon as they get there stuff home or I should say most of the [H] people. Not to mention that the cpu in most high end systems are one of the cheapest thing in there or maybe just mine.

Next, you should lap you're entire case. I think that'd be sweet, especially if it's an all metal one.
I would do that since my case is aluminum but I would get tired of yelling at everyone for touching it and putting there finger prints on it.:D

I didn't want to say anything for awhile but now I will after seeing this at both OC.com and now here. I usually enjoy your enthusiasm with projects I do and post them over multiple websites also but this one is a little scary.

I have lapped several IHS on tualatins and now on a couple PIV's. I even removed the IHS from one of my PIV's and several tualatins. Big mistake. It works but I hate the feeling of not having the IHS on the CPU when I remove and apply my HS.

Anyway either lapping or removing the HS has done little if anything for overclockability and temps dropped maybe 2~4 deg. C.

It is not worth it IMHO since it does easily void your warranty.

It does look pretty but I rarely look under my HS to see how shiny the IHS is. Usually it is all gummy with thermal paste.

My reccomedation after going through all this same stuff is just too leave the IHS alone.

If you are going to lap something lap your HS.

Also wanted to add the best way to lap is with wet dry using water to hold down the sandpaper stuck to a glass window or mirror. Cohesion is a miraculous thing.

When your wet/dry gets full of particles simply run it under hot water and then reuse.

If you don;t do this I would hate to see how many sheets of sandpaper you go through and starting with 220 grit is just too damn coarse.

Im not sure what that means but,Ok.Mines running about 4-5c cooler already so thats good enough reason for me to do it.These chips only costs like $165 so big deal if I void it,Who really cares. When you put sinks on your video card that voids its warranty but we all do it.If you are scarred about voiding your warranties then you guys should not be overclocking because that voids them also.To each his own.

When your wet/dry gets full of particles simply run it under hot water and then reuse. Holding the sand paper down with water sounds like a good way to do it instead of tape,I didnt really have a problem with the tape but on the 300 were it was more grity but not a big problem.

I started at 300 and only used 1 sheet of each grit.so thats 300,600,800 and for [H]ardness I went 1200 so that cost me under $4.I dont use water,I just blow off the stuff with some compressed air and that works just as good.Holding the sand paper down with water sounds like a good way to do it instead of tape,I didnt really have a problem with the tape but on the 300 were it was more grity but not a big problem.

Just wondering? Is your sig big enough? 13 lines. wtf
I understand my sig is a few lines over but the way this kid says it is like I just cost him a weeks pay or something. Is this really one of the things that makes this kid so mad:rolleyes: .I fixed it so now the lines are longer for those of you that really get bent out of shape over such a hugh problem we have here.

Agreed, your sig is too long. Shorten that shit up.

I dont know about you but having no chance in hell to rma your shit is not me. You better believe for 165.00 I will be rmaing. I dont care if I ran it with no heatsink at long as it doesnt look like I lapped it they will send me a new one. I have done it for years thats what warrantys are for and never once have I been even asked if I oced it??????:p

Thats your choice.Ive been thru many cpus and never had to rma any of them. Some people like to go to the next level and some dont,I choose too.

he was just talking about lapping his cpu; obviously he didn't care that he voided his warranty in the process-- he didn't need to know that you don't want to void yours by doing it..so why bother posting? seems like a waste to me.

btw- nice lapping job.

what are you his boyfriend?? Its kind of like your post nobody wanted to know that you care for him. maybe he can give you a lap dance:D

Can you show me in his post were it says he cares for me?
Find another way to make your post count higher then making stupid posts like this.
Its more like he is trying to explain to some of you that you dont have to go around telling people in a overclocking forum about how they are going to void everything by doing this stuff and your not going to do it. Most of us know and dont care because if we did we wouldnt do it.

hold on there, kumquat-- guess you didn't read forum guidelines, did you?

it's a non-flaming forum, just so you know

and also, I was telling you because your mind seems inable to grasp the concept that this is an OVERCLOCKING forum. OVERCLOCKING voids your warranty, so why does it matter if someone wants to void theirs by lapping their heatspreader on their P4? Grow up and find somewhere else to post your nonsense.

read the thread before you reply dumbass You deserved to be flamed for your girlish ways and sticking your nose where it dont belong. Just STFU please Go and tell if it makes you feel better

Why are you quoting yourself?I agree with what you said to yourself so take yout own advise and listen to what you said to yourself.

Anyone who takes advantage of RMAing like you do when you know you are overclocking and voiding the warranty and want a new cpu because you ruined it is a lame a$& person and overclocker.

Why did everyone turn my cool post into crap??????

it was never a cool post dont fool yourself. like no one has ever seen a lapped cpu before.
you can save your bs "moral" values about rmaing. I have done it for years and I will keep doing it:p

There are alot of people who havent seen one you moron.

You are just a A$% H&@$ for doing this and if I was a mod I would gag you for awhile just for taking advantage of a RMA when you overclock. Its these people that make things hard for people that really need to RMA there stuff because of a problem that they didnt cause. You are a true ass,It shows in your posts. If this was overclockers.com and you bragged about overclocking your stuff till you broke it then RMAed it all the tim,e you would be banned.Im done replying to this looser who should not even be aloud to post here. What is this forum coming too?

Because true oc'ers hate stupid jackoffs who have no morals. A warranty is a warranty and is only good on the conditions stated. Oc'ing, using a different TIM or heatsink/fan, will void the warranty. If you oc and burn up your cpu, then obviously it is user error and shouldn't be RMA'd. If you plan to do something to your cpu, you should know the repercussions.

:p
dont hate
never once have I had a problem rmaing so dont give me that bs that it makes it harder to rma for other people. there is counseling if you feel guilty for other reasons other personal issues lol
