I am in the process of deciding what hardware to put in my new computer im going to build. I want to know if this computer will play the upcoming Halflife2, Halo, and GTA Vice City, and other games like that.

Here are the specs...

Asus A7N8X (non-deluxe) motherboard
AMD 2500+ Barton Processor
512MB Kingston PC2700
40GB 7200 RPM Hard drive
XFX GeForce FX 5600 Ultra Video Card, 128MB DDR

Thank you!

Sure it will play them all

Just maybe not HL2 so good... but it may, we havent seen how powerfull the game exactly will be.... but it will run

Halo is laggy on about 99% of systems, it was written poorly, it lags on my box.. but it will run.
GTA VC runs great on alot of machines, you should be good to go there

Half Life 2 sure! It's not out yet, but I'm sure the comp will run it.

As for how well it will run it, no one knows. I've seen the E3 video, the machine running the demo at that was a P4 2.8C with a 9800Pro. It all depends on how well you want it to run.

However, I think you should ditch that FX5600 card, the 9600Pro would be a better choice. If you must stick with nVidia, go for a 5900 nonUltra. I don't know how much that 5600 costs, but you can buy a 9700 Pro from ATi for around $200, and right now, the Sapphire 9800Pro from Newegg is only around $239.

Mobo and proc are nice, it's a good AMD combo.

Yea Halo is so F'in laggy it's not even funny. I play all the old HL stuff great, yet there seems to be something gay about Halo textures that dont allow me to play well at anything above 800by600. Although I do get PLAYABLE framrates in 1024by7... but for me it's either 80+ fps or bust.

Point of advice. Only ask if your computer will run current games that are released not games that barely even have a release date in the near future. Absolutely NOBODY will be able to tell you how it will perform and if that computer will be able to run it smoothly. And when you said Halo did you mean possibly the upcoming Halo 2 for PC?

What video card would you guys recommend for around 150 dollars?

BurningGrave,

No, I didnt mean Halo 2, I meant the Halo out now. And by asking about HalfLife2, I was kind of asking about how my computer would handle games in the near future. Thanks for the advice though!

BillLeeLee, do you have a 9600PRO?
If so, what makes it better than most cards in that price range?

Get the best video card you can, I say 9700 Pro is worth it....

But if you cant afford it, get the 9600 Pro

I have a 9600XT, which is just a higher clocked 9600 Pro. The 9600Pro performs better than the 5600 Ultra in the reviews and benchmarks I've seen, especially with aniso and AA turned on.

Anything FX series card less than a Geforce 5700 Ultra is not worth considering in my book.

However, the ATi 9700/9800 prices have been dropping. If you can, go for the 9700 Pro as I suggested earlier, or even the 9800 Pro from Sapphire at the Egg. You'll be happy.

Again it would be hard to say for sure. They may run fine and then again it may not run very well at all. With all the new technology coming up especially with video cards im sure game developers will take full advantage of them which usually leaves older technology running "ok" or not very good.

also, try getting 2x512MB RAM, or at least 768 (3x256, although that won't run in dual channel, but no biggy, since you're going AMD).
