what do you think about this SSD?

hello!

what do you think about this SSD?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SDS...15?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1359505036&sr=1-15

the amount of discount is surprising

thanks!

Not a good choice for the money: It is of an older Sandforce controller design, and it's only a SATA 3.0 Gbps SSD rather than a SATA 6.0 Gbps SSD. What's more, its £70 price tag is way too close to those of superior-performing SATA 6.0 Gbps SSDs of the same capacity for its own good. So in other words, even with this "huge" discount it's still a poor bang for the buck. (At current exchange rates, £69.99 UKP equals $110.29 USD.)

it may, but I can't risk incompatibility issues, neither want to pay for more bandwidth that I will never take advantage of!

Have you tried contacting tech support at GB? Maybe they could verify SATA III for the MoBo.

I did ask for a list of verified compatible models. They just repeated what the specs webpage says...

SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II & SATA I.. You wont get full benefit of the speed of course, but your better off buying a newer drive..

This will be the case. And as for speed other then benchmarks you will not notice if your SATA III drive is plugged into a SATA II or SATA III port. The speed difference is not that much if at all for real world data.

100% backwards compatible. A SATA-III drive that doesn't work in a SATA II port is broken.

Get a better drive for the same price.

I knew that SATA 6.0 Gbps SSDs are compatible with SATA 3.0 Gbps systems. It's just that the OP would have paid too much money for an SSD that would have bottlenecked the performance of a newer system with full SATA 6.0 Gbps capability in case he wants to upgrade to a newer system.

In any case, the SanDisk Ultra in that link is not a very good SSD even for SATA II: Its real world performance in random writes is far slower than its advertised claim due to its use of cheap asynchronous NAND flash chips.

(I must stick to SATA-II, due to mobo compatibility)

thanks!
That drive is really overpriced anyway. I brought a 256gb Vertex4 off there earlier for £163. They had Crucial 256gb V4's for ~£130 and M4's for ~£150. Both are much better value. And as Other's have mentioned SATA is backwards compatitble!

Right now I'd give the Samsung 830's more time to prove themselves as they're using a much different technology than other SSD's.
