Hello, i have decided to build my own computer as i went with a company and they completely messed the system up. I am a first time builder with a very basic knowledge of the workings and all. I just want to post the components i have chosen with the hope that people will reply with their opinions and maybe possible problems that they can see the syetem will have due to my setup. Here's the setup (bear in mind i dont have these components yet, its just what id want):

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD 64 FX-55
Hyper 520W PSU
Corsair TwinX1024 - PC3200 C2 Pro
Thermalright XP-90 CPU Cooler
ATI Radeon 256MB X850XT Platinum Edition
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Maxtor DiamondMAX 250GB SATA
IDE DVD-ROM + Floppy Drive
Plextor PX-716A DVD-RW IDE Drive

A couple of thoughts:

- Why pay extra for an SLI mobo and buy a single (admittedly very good) ATI graphics card. Only some of nVidia's stuff will run with 2 GPUs at the moment.
- Check out the CPU cooling in very great detail. I think the FX-55 deserves the very best. Not my field though so can't offer you more.
- If speed is important to you, swap out the 250Gb for a 74Gb Raptor. The capacity is comparatively small, but they don't half shift. Plug in another drive for storage later on when you can afford it.
 
(1) i can tell you immediately that that computer will cost between $2,000 and $5,000. are you sure that you can make that kind of financial commitment?

(2) i agree with mulps... getting an sli board and an (incompatible) ati graphics card makes about as much sense as a catfish pedaling a bike. especially since that card has yet to be released.

(3) you can drop that dvd-rom. anything that can burn dvd's can also read them.

(4) double-check that hsf-- you want the very best that is possible for that particular chip. there is a reason that it beats the crap out of anything intel's got out right now, and that reason means a LOT of heat.

(5) i question the psu choice... go with antec or something equally well-known. it costs a certain amount of money to produce a psu of "x" capability, and you will pay that money-- whether it's in the initial investment or in repair costs is your choice ;)

(6) i would HIGHLY suggest that you either take an a+ certification class (be sure to take one of the more meaningful of these) and get in a little practice with building computers. you will otherwise mess up far more than the company did.
 
thanks for the reply m8. The reason behind my choice of graphics card is 2 things, supplies for the Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra (which has the SLI option) are very scarse and i was finding it hard to find a retailer that had one, and I have found much more outlets doing the ATI card. Secondly i cant afford 2 graphics cards at the minute, i choose the SLI board to future proof myself :)

I have researched thoroughly into CPU cooling. I was on a forum (actually on this site) and the guy was asking which CPU cooler he should get for his FX55 (socket 939). From that forum i got 4 different makes, the Hyper 6, Thermalright XP-90, XP-120, and Zalman CNPS 7000A CLU. I done a bit of reseach on each, and the hyper 6 is extremely big and heavy, and im afraid of it ripping off my board (which will be mounted vertically) and smashing my GPU, which i have read has happened to a few peeps. I was also reading alot of bad reviews for the XP-120, and they were reccommending the XP-90. lastly the Zalman has a huge radius and as i dont have the components yet i cant be assured that it'll fit. So i choose the XP-90 and now ive just to find a decent 92mm fan (preferably with speed control) if anybody can reccommend any???

Im actually thinking about your last comment there. Because if i had the faster, smaller drive for the OS and progs, and stored all the crap on another drive it would dramatically increase the speed programs and stuff run at, would i be right in saying that?

Hey starhawk.

1) i have already priced what the system will cost and its around £1600, dont know what that is in dollars. I already have substantial funds for the system.

2) Like i said before... the Nvidia card is damn hard to get :(

3) Im including the DVD-ROM so that i can write "on the fly"

4) look at my last post for my reason for choosing that HSF.

5) The company that built the messed up system left the PSU in it, and it is a 520W which surpasses the requirments on the Asus website. But maybe i should look into it, thx :confused:

6) Maybe i should take a course. Its just when that company screwed up, i was on the internet researching other companies and they all have their fair share of bad reviews. But it was amazing how many people were saying "dont buy from companies, build your own its not that hard and its cheaper" So it kinda give me the incentive to look into it and ive staggered across a few sites that tell you step-by-step how to build a computer. I guess when u come across a problem, then your kinda stuck.

Also i wanna know if i was to go for these components, are they all compatible? I know the ATI isnt SLI compatible.
