What do you recommend for a U2711.

I have been using an HD 5870 1gb purchased here from [H] for a year and a half and BF3 on Medium settings plays just fine on 64player maps with no lag.

I want to know what video card(s) are recommended for my 2560*1440 resolution.

I would be playing BF3 when i feel like it, Skyrim, Civ, maybe another FPS, and an MMORPG if I get hooked again.

I would purchase the 7950 for $400 for reference, considering I would sell my card and enjoy the 3GB ram.

Bizarely I just logged on to ask very much the same question :D

I have just got the 27inch Dell and have recently started getting into PC gaming. Yesterday I played Skyrim at full resolution and Dirt 3. I say "played" in the loosest form of the word since I had no idea what I was doing in Skyrim.

I am using a GTX 560ti and Skyrim detected and suggested ultra high settings itself. So I suppose for this game the card is good enough. I've been considering getting a 7970 but I'm wondering whether it is worth upgrading at the moment, and if so what to? TBH I'm very much a casual gamer and apart from BF3 and Crysis2 i doubt I'll be asking much of any graphics card.

Yeah I faced this choice when I bought my u2711, one 3gb GTX 580 or go for two....I chose SLI and I'm glad I did..high resolution really does need GPU grunt..if you want all the graphical fruit in games.

I would probably get one 7970, and keep the option open to Crossfire down the track. Unless of course you would like to wait for new Nvidia cards.

I decided to get a 7950. Bought the Sapphire OC edition which has a custom cooler rather than reference. Very quiet. My old Zotac 560ti was noticeable in games and so far the Sapphire is not. Wonderful piece of kit and highly recommended.

Just played Dirt 3 at maximum settings and Fraps never once recorded less than 60fps. The actual frame rate was higher but the software does not record more than that.

I'm using an Asus DCU2 Top 7970 with this exact monitor.
Don't have any issues at the max resolution with any game so far, including BF3 w/Ultra settings and 2xSSAA, mind you, I don't play BF3 MP, so can't comment what it would be like in that situation.

thanks for the advice guys I'll consider the purchase once ATI decides to stop milking the consumers with high prices.
