I was just wondering what most people are using for doing there backups?

Do you use a second hard drive, second partition, cd-r, dvd-r, nothing ???

Right now I have my 120gb segate split into 100 and 20 partions and I use the 20 to back stuff up on, but I would like to have a beeter solution. I usually back up quite a bit, music, movies, downloaded programs, personal files. Its nice to have somewhere to back up all that stuff so I can reformat the windows drive if it starts getting really slow and crowded with crap.

I was thinking about mabe picking up a 40gb segate or something like that.
 
Best thing to do would be to burn your files onto a CD-R or DVD-R. Putting backups on a partition on the same drive is not really safe - if the hard drive goes, all your data goes with it. SAme goes for having two HDDs - if a power surge or something wipes both out, you're SOL.

With on- or off-site optical storage backups, you can easily back up and restore and feel safe.
 
Yeah, having it on the same hardrive isnt that great, wont protect from failed hard drive.

I have way to much to back up for CD-R, but dont have a DVD burner. DVD burners are coming down in price, can get a 4x for pretty cheap but not sure if its worth it cause I would probably only use it for back ups once in a while.
 
If you've got time and a burner, there's no way you have "too much" for CD-R. Cheap CD-Rs are less than 5 cents apiece these days, and backup quality ones can be had for about 15 to 20 cents (I got a 100-spindle for free after rebates at OfficeMax once).

One thing you could try is having an external hard drive that you just unplug when you're not using and you can carry it with you or whatever. It's expensive, but it's also very convenient, and over FireWire, you can get decent speed, too.
 
Well my dad just gave me his old iomega peerless and a 20 gb hd for it. I'm using that now.

It's pretty slow but then again it's like 3 years old and using usb 1.0.

I also put stuff on cd-r's and jump drives.
 
I have a second HDD in my system that I sync my critical data to. Every now and then I take a "snapshot" of the directories and back them up to a different computer. I also burn CD's and DVD's with my data intermittently.

Just make sure you *test* your backup solution periodically.
 
I use Windows XP Professional's built in backup software

Monday thru Friday - Differential
Saturday - Normal

Backup files are copied to a file server daily.
At the end of every week the files are written to CDR.

I only backup irreplaceable data - school work and work for projects. MP3s, etc I couldn't care less about.

For those who do offsite backups, what do you do?
 
I live a little dangerously because I'm backing everything up on an old 5400RPM drive that's about 3 years old :p. If you have the capability, DVD would be the best route.
 
Since HDs are so cheap now, I just use another HD to back up to. When I upgraded to an 80gb raid setup, I just used one of my old 40gb drives to hold my backups and use Acronis TrueImage to backup everything periodically with my personal data on a much more regular basis. Stuff like emails, quicken data, My Documents folder, etc.

Things like MP3s, pictures, etc. though, I back them up to a CD for a more permanent backup.
 
just rar all important files (documents/emails/pictures/bookmarks) and so fourth and burn to dvd+rw and just update on weekly basis

i would like to maybe setup raid or have a spare external hd that i do backups instead of dvd+rw but no money atm ...
 
I back stuff on cd-r's cuz there cheap and i use my 2Gb cf card for school projects. Don't really use dvd's yet.
 
a mixed approach seems best - back up to both cd and harddrive - since harddrives are now cheap - you can definately use hds as back ups - using the cd as well is double the insurance...

External drives work good too. I've been using the Seagate 160gb external for some time now. The one-touch backup is pretty nifty too. It backs up everything you specify once, then only the modified/new files get updated.

It's enclosed well and since you don't really run the drive 24/7, the life of the drive will be much longer too. Did the cd/dvd thing before, but after awhile it becomes more of a hassle. Well, that's just me anyways.. :D
