What do you go with when using 3d apps?

Im starting to get more into modeling and 3d programs like 3dmax, i was wondering what do you guys prefer in 3d applications? whats your experience with which video card being best for 3d programs? ati or nvidia?

It kinda makes me wish reviewers could put in some 3d Apps when doing their benchmarking, i know they aim at the gamer, but it wouldnt hurt. :)

I use 3DS Max 6 and Lightwave 8. I haven't ever used an Nvidia with these programs, and the ATI seems to work well with them. If I go with the 6800U, I'll be able to answer this question better. lol

I know one thing, this FX-53 really improved the performance in Max 6 over my old XP3200+.

Edit: These are not warez versions... lol my company paid for them for me.

thx for the reply, didnt think anybody here actually use modeling type programs. have you ever tried a program called wings3d? its free, and a pretty easy program after using it for a few hours. just not great for rendering.

I think that for a 3D program like that, image quality would be more of a factor than speed, so a Matrox card would be more desirable. Just my $0.02.

No, actually I haven't. I am however having a blast with Terragen.. with some time and effort, you can make some really nice scenes with it. Terragen is pretty taxing for a system so it's a good way to test out a new cpu.

Although I'll admit that the Matrox cards have superior 2d quality, I don't feel it's good enough to justify buying purely for that. Using my ATI or and Nvidia works just fine, but I can also use it for games when the days over, unlike the Matrox which has lackluster game performance.

Has anyone tried hacking their RADEON into a FireGL/2 to see how that affects anything?

Yep, sure have. I converted my 9700 Pro into a FireGL just to see if I could. Didn't seem to do much for performance, though.

My suggestion would be to find a used GF4Ti4xxx and softmod it into a quadro.

However, you do realise MOST of the rendering is done by your CPU and the main components, being the chipset and memory. VERY improtant to put most of your money into that. The graphics card is secondary, and only used for previews.

Maya PLE/Unlimitied is pretty sweet on my GeForce 4GO 440, but thats only if I run no other memory
hogging apps like KaZaa K++ or TorrentStorm.

Is Lightwave sitll using the Sentinel Parallel Port hardware key on Version 8?
I haven't updated my LightWave since V 5.5 since I grew out of my 3D phase.
Just wondering if they went to a USB type hardware key.

thx for the replys guys, seems like there are more 3d heads here than i expected

Like most people in the 3d field, I used 3ds Max a lot to begin with and then moved onto other packages. At the moment I do most of my work in Maya, although I'd love to have a go with Softimage 4 - I've used some of Avid's other programs in the past and been nothing but impressed.

3ds Max is great for learning. (And there are a lot of uses for it, it depends on what field you're working with. For 3d use in visual effects, it just doesn't cut it for me.)

Hardware for 3d/VFX industries is my main area of interest, but like most people I'm forced to make do with what I've got. I use an Asus Radeon 9800XT in my main rig, which isn't ideal. I get by with it, but you really will notice the difference using a FireGL/Quadro based card. The problems on my Radeon are nothing major, just small (and very annoying) glitches. Rough edges in the render view (viewing at 1:1), rough edges along the seams when patch modelling, that sort of thing - minor display issues.
