What do you with your old video cards when you upgrade? Are they in spare pcs or just sitting around collecting dust?
 
I mostly sell the expensive ones, give to my nephews for the cheaper ones and just keep the worthless ones.
 
If I can get 100 or more for it I usually sell them.

If not, it's always good to keep for folding boxen etc.
 
I post them in a public forum at no more than half the original price before they become two years old. They go very fast this way and i'll actually get something rather than just have a card gathering dust in a corner. The money i get adds to my next upgrade.

I usually only keep one main machine running and because i'm constantly buying new hardware i just sell everything on forums or ebay.

It usually keeps the costs for upgrades pretty low if you get a good price on what you sell.

The key is to sell them before they drop in price alot.
 
I sold a couple of my older Nvidia cards (Ti200 & Ti4600) back in the day. Kept an old Radeon Mac Edition in an old but pimped beige G4 server. Kept a 9800Pro for a Dell machine that I gave to my bro to get him started on gaming. I'll probably sell my x800xt-pe when the next generation comes out. It overclocks pretty high on the core (575+ stock cooler) and should still be worth a few bucks. :)
 
Older cards get demoted to the other household computer. Then to the third household computer. Then to someone else. :)
 
as others have said: I put the card being replaced in my main machine into my secondary machine. Depending on what card it is, I usually ask friends if they have need of a new card. If they do they get it.

Right now main machine has a 6800 secondary machine has a Gforce4 4200 turbo from Albatron. The card that was in that went to my old roommate.
 
My Old cards just stay with their original machine and a new Ethernet cable/Wireless card is then bought. The machine is then positioned somewhere in the room or somewhere in the house and kept operational. Why throw away a good computer/good working vid card?

All my 4 computers are still in use one way or another.
1 400Mhz with a RIVA TNT2
1 800Mhz with a GeForce 2
1 2.8Ghz With a Radeon 9800Pro
1 2.0Ghz with a Geforce 6800

.. i gave away my 9600 pro.. a shame i wasted 200 for her.. although ... i only bought it with 100 bucks... when it was 200.. was warranty let over money from crappy monitor.. stupid Fry's .. switching over to newegg and online retailers.. screw the system...

6800GT for united devices goodness. I keep almost all of my old cards, hoping that someday someone will say hey! Ill take the lot for X ammount of money :)
 
They're sold on eBay unless the value is too low to make it worth my while, in which case I give them away..
 
I'm a freaking pack rat. I have all the computer parts I've ever purchased. If a friend needs a part, I'll give/lend it to them.

P3 1.2GHz, 256MB RAM, Geforce4 ti4400
P3 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 9700pro
P4 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800GT
P4 3.4GHz, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800GT

Plus I have an 6600GT PCI-E sitting around since I only have one machine with PCI-E, which has a 6800GT. Probably lend the 6600GT to my friend if he upgrades to an PCI-E motherboard.

I usually like to keep 2 machines on par/current because I like to game together with my brother. Also, I feel bad if my brother is playing at low quality while I'm blowing him away with +60fps and high settings.

My power bill gets pretty crazy with all systems on, so 95% of the time only the bottom 4 systems are on (2 for me and 2 for my bro or sometimes my parents use the 2 secondary systems).

Anyways, I've always been 1.5 generations behind thus all the old systems didn't really cost me much. Only recently with some killer deals did I get near the high end.
 
I usually keep old stuff (including video cards) until it either breaks or gets too old to be used anywhere. I still have some EISA soundcards lying around.... and a SoundBlaster/Adaptec 2940UW combo card for Asus' Media Bus that I can't get myself to throw away :p
 
My "old" cards are usually too old to be sold for real profit so they usually go into a lesser machine that's doing something like server or test bench duty.
 
I put them in a metal cage and they have to fight to the death - the one that wins I keep until I upgrade again and it has to fight once more!
 
When I get new stuff the old stuff usually goes to my wifes PC.

Then her old stuff and any of my old stuff still left is usually sold cheap to my best friend who doesn't quite have the financial freedom I have thanks two his 2 kids.
 
I usually sell my old video card when I want to upgrade. It helps lessen the pain of buying a new card.
 
I try to donate them to the fine fellows in the Distributed Computing Forum so it can be put to use for a good cause.

Otherwise I'll upgrade the in-laws computer as they're even more behind on the times than I.


 
I keep them (and other components) around and build extra boxen. I'll also use them for testing downed systems or replacing blown components in client's machines.
 
I find that old PC parts make excelent xmas tree decorations. My old Diamond Viper and Voodoo3 are still serving me strong after what 5 years now?? My familly (my GF included) look at me like I am nuts for doing it, but what better way to spread holiday cheer then putting old out dated cards, ram, MB, CPU to good use.

If they still work i try to sell/hand them down, but this is what i do with the dead ones anyway.
 
This sounds crazy. I actually rip off the cores from the pcb and put them on the keychain. Hopefully that doesn't sound too crazy! :confused:
 
What I like to call a "Hardware Shootout." Take a bunch of old crappy parts, a backwater area, guns, and friend. Yeehaw!
 
I hoard parts like a squirrel hoards nuts. Still have the original P166 box I used back in the day, gathering dust. Plus enough parts to build ten more machines just like it, stuff that I recovered from a junkyard. I can't even bear to get rid of my broken old 4x CDR or the three HDDs my machine has killed over the years (I'll fix them someday, I swear)

only time i have done this is when i gave my friend my athlon 1700 machine away for his birthday... he had a large calculator .. 166 mhz and it had a turbo button :D
 
I actually put them in boxes. Someday I would sell them but not likely. I like old cards. I still have the Voodoo 5 5500 too. :) The cards are there for anyone to borrow, really.

I mounted my first GeForce3 Ti500 (now dead) on a piece of plexiglass, and mounted that to a piece of black painted board, all on stand-offs. looks awesome, makes for an excellent computer room decoration.
