what do pc cases actualy do for the pc?

Supplies reset/power buttons, power/harddisk lights, place to put everything? Some offer front USB/firewire/something else ports...
 
some people argue that the case has a big effect on cooling, but i think it is more the though put into the cooling system that is installed in the case.

for me cases are all about looks, but if it has good stock cooling lay out all the better
 
Protects components from the outside environment--food, spilled liquids, etc. Protects outside equipment from electromagnetic interference, and shields computer components from the EMI of the outside world. Protects computer components from electrostatic discharge. Provides a controlled path to ground for safer and more reliable operation.
 
ok...thanks everyone but i think i should have been more specific.... i mean like do i really need a $100 case.....is the case something u can just skimp on?
 
Case you can skimp, but I wouldn't skimp on a Power Supply - which is something to think about with cases that come with them.
 
thats y i want to skimp on the case for i can fit a good psu in my budget....any recamendations for a good quality psu?(greater then 400w)
 
You honestly probably don't need something over 400watts, especially if you get a good brand name... Like ANTEC, or PC Power and Cooling.
 
i beg to differ, i am aiming to get a 3000+ and oc it to 2.6ghz, 6800gt softmodded to ultra speeds, and i think that needs some power

and i was thinking about a antec truepower 430w for $75, but that seems kind of pricie and i could probably get a good 500w for that price
 
just grounding and component protection i think. you can get a 20 dollar case off of newegg, and get a DAMN good PSU from the same place. psu are important

The fact is a case convieniently houses all the parts of the computer (mobo, cards, drives, PSU), as everyone has already said. More importantly, it keeps the computer parts from damage from the outside world (moisture, objects that could break it etc.), as well as protecting you from electrocution. Thats why you want the case to be strong and able to take shocks. Finally, its a cosmetic thing (as well as a practical thing): I mean, when you have a whole jumble of computer parts just sitting on a desk, it isn't a really attractive thing. And, if you want to move the whole system, you have to unplug everything and move them, instead of just moving the case with the components in it.

In other words, you probably shouldn't skimp too much on the case. If you don't like the designer cases with windows and whatnot, you don't have to buy them - but buy one thats solid and good for your needs.

And, to a degree, cat hair. Plus, my cat likes to lick things... I don't want fried components OR a fried cat. :)

well, i'm trying to get a case(black) and psu for about $120, and i want a nice quality psu so that leaves me with about $50 for the case and i heard that 120mm fans are better and quieter then 80mm fans....and all of the cases that support 120mm fans are pretty expensive....i would like a case with a window.....and i would like a little feedback about 80mm vs 120mm and will i need a "fan controller"?

when i upgraded from my HP case to an Antec P160, there was allot more airflow and space, dropping temps on my CPU and video card. I cant remember exactly, but i know the video card was like a 15-20 degree drop and the CPU dropped as well. Then i put another 120mm fan in teh front, and there was another 5 degrees of the CPU...Also more space = more shit you can put in...bigger mobos, more HDDs etc...
 
i will put something together on newegg tomarrow to specify the amount of money i could spend on a psu, good thing i can get stuff for christmass, or else i would have went way over my budget, if only my birthday was in january, then i would be able to get a really nice computer :p
 
i had some time so i did all that now. i got about $970 with out the soundcard(will get from uncle) and then the vid card out of my own pocket :( , and the printer and monitor from my parents, and if u havent put everything together, the printer,monitor,and soundcard are my christmass presents, how exciteing! :eek: anyway for the case, fans(better then stock), and psu i will put in as much money as i can before i hit $1200 including tax(6%) and shipping (and if any of u live around my area(michigan) pm me about the computer shows at the gibralter trade center, are parts cheaper there?)
 
that chenming case is a good starter case, its made of aluminum if i remember correctly.

i wouldn't skimp on PS though, go with Antec TRUE power series.
 
In CCNA I learned the computer uses the chassis as a 0 voltage signal reference to be able to read electrical signals as 0 or 1 properly. This is not true. The case does nothing at all.
