What do I do?

I wanted to get a PCI-E x1 sound card but the two PCI-E x1 ports are being covered by the GPU, and I only have the white and black PCI-E x16 ports available on my ASUS P8Z68-V PRO. I also have 1 PCI slot (the other one is half-way covered by the GPU).

Googled your board... A solution is, if you only have one card and for whatever reason its covering the top PCI-e 1x slot then move your GFX card to the white slot, and there you go.

What graphics card are you using? I find it hard to believe it is covering the top PCI-e 1x slot unless it has some really unorthodox 3rd part heatsink.

Asus Xonar 5.1 DG is a good PCI card, newegg USA $33 shipped with $10 rebate thru Nov.

Additionally if you have a PCI-e 1x card it should work fine in one of the available 16x slots.

Was i mistaken in how i read the question? I thought this was about PCI-e 1x card placement.

Mmm, maybe. He wanted to get PCI-E card but PCI-E are covered. He can use the PCI-E X 16 but I don't know if he is reserving them forsome reason.
He does have a PCI x 1 slot, I wouldn't invest much in possibly vanishing tech. The DG offers clean sound and a headphone amp.
I haven't checked the Asus motherboard but expect it has a 892 Realtec audio chip, not the better 889.
Depending on board and listener (and parts? driven) this is discussion on whether the DG is much better than the 889 on board. Unanamous is this is the easy answer for inadaquate onboard sound and/or headphone amp.

Agreed seeing different information here.
