What do I do with an iMac

I saved an iMac form the garbage a while back but have never figured out why. Here are some pics from when I tried to sell it:

Since obviously no one wants to buy one I need to make it more useful. I am working on getting Mandrake 10.1 for PPC installed, but can't get it to read the stupid CD's. But I'll figure it out. SO in the mean time I was thinking of gutting it and putting it in something else. The whole Mac is incredibly small. Basically cut off the bottom and thats it, but inside it takes up maybe a little over half the area after you cut the bottom off. Thats HD, CD-ROM, pwr, etc. I am not sure if a VGA monitor would work through an adapter as I have read something about the monitor being powered through the mobo. I am not even sure if the iMac will work without the monitor. (i.e. pwr on)

What do you guys think? Anyone try this before?

haha a boat anchor.... ever seen the video? about the imac and how useless it is....

haha sorry for off topic...

Fold for the [H]orde. We always need more boxen. Check out the Distributed Computer forum for more info.

Wow, that actually sounds sweet. Will it run on OS 9 at all? Looks like Linux is ok, I didn't have time to read through the forum, but I will check it out later an see if Ic an run it on a couple computers. Is this resourse intensive or does it run in the background? Thanks man!

If some dude can mod a foreman grill to a pc, you can mod that sucker too!

LKS

I've seen em used as fish tanks.

You can put linux on it and turn it into a web/ftp/file server. Otherwise, you can turn it into a fish tank. I personally think those old iMacs are ugly as shit.

I'd gut it and use it naked, then do something else with the case. I have no idea what, maybe cut a hole in the bottom and wear it as a helmet, then again, I'm pretty much completely batshit insane.

its resource intensive yes. but frankly i don't notice it at all. i can use itunes and all the other progs on my g4 450 just fine. as far as windows i really don't notice it. it doesn't really slow down games at all. i still get the same FPS on HL2 and other games. I think if you're using some other program thats gonna use 100% cpu load for awhile then F@H goes to a low cpu use mode til you're done and the cpu goes back to idle. then it goes back to full folding. i think thats how it goes anyway. should ask one of the guys in the DC forum to be sure though. but as far as me, i don't notice it.

I use the Mac I have around here for a door stop. On occassion it gets upgraded to being a foot stool.

You really can't consider yourself a serious computer enthusiast if you just dismiss apple computers because they run on a different OS... I like this site because it has educated discussions about technology. If you want to bash Macs with the rest of the 14 year olds on the internet, I suggest you perhaps try the SA or PA forums, or better yet, practice a little tolerance for other peoples choices.

take out the crt and all the old apple parts, replace it with an lcd and a new pc. paint the casing and all that.

I have an onld iMac sitting around, the problem with trying to make it into a pc is the toiletseat shaped mobo in it. Maybe ill just ebay it one of these day, lol it has a 350mhz processor in it with a 6gb maxtor hard drive. :)

What output is a iMac Keyboard? (PS/2 USB or something else?)

USB in that one and newer. old beige case ones ones had a proprietary thing (i think)

Heh, I also have that same keyboard sitting in my droor. I brought it with me to use on my powerbook, but I really don't have a need for it. What are you looking at them for?

i use an old style eMac keyboard on my PC (the one like that but clear with white keys, the newer ones are more compact and you arent able to adjust the angle of the keys)

besides using it as a boat anchor, put all you windows keys, isos, and cd's inside of it, and if you ever get caught by the FBI, blame it on the mac.

if you're a realy big apple guy than you could buy one of those newer Apple Mini's. They seem semi decent (i dont know much about macs at all) and it looks like it would probably fit in their. than just some cheap lcd and it would look kinda cool.

but....why would you mod a mac ini into an imac case? thats just retarted. its TINY. why make it bigger?

I understand the want to make stuff go splodey, but blowing up a perfectly good PC is #1 bad for the environment #2 just plain wasteful. If you decide to take that route, I suggest you feed your head by loading SE Linux on the puppy, or clean out any sensitive information and give it to a battered womens shelter.

I'd buy it, if it works, but you might want more than I'm willing to PAY for it...

Yeah.. $100.

I'd give you $40 shipped for it
