I acquired an older Dell poweredge 1950 server with dual E5345 processors. It only has 4GB of RAM but RAM is practically free. What the hell can I do with this thing other than heat my room with it?
 
Whew. Good question. I have a 2900 I upgraded to a Gen 3 and 16GB of RAM with some Xeon 5450 CPU's. I'm selling it to a friend for $100. Just because I picked up a poweredge R710 for a STEAL. I also have a poweredge 1900, and I have no idea what to do with that. The problem with these servers is they are loud and hot. They can still run server 2016 and vmware. So maybe you can play with it that way.
 
The ark says it doesn't support ECC memory. Is this for real?
You definitely have to upgrade to 8/16 Gigs.
Any storage that came with it? Are the fans and such okay and not grinding?
I'd say it's a pretty useful device if you only have a few potential clients.

Other than that, well, it's probably not worth it to have those CPUs loaded constantly because of the relative inefficiency (65nm, 8 megs of cache).

What do you need? Dual NICs so this could make a nice UTM, and, like THUMPer said - it's good for some VMs.

Not domain server/fileserver material, though. No RAID.
Me I like to play around with CCTV so I'd probably downclock it some, change to cooling to silence it, get a PCIe framegrabber and use it as a 4 hi-def camera CCTV system.
 
It takes fully buffered ddr2 up to 32GB. I can upgrade it for free or nearly free and will. It has a perc 5i raid card with two 1.5tb drives in raid 1 currently. The fans and everything including redundant power supplies are running great. I put server 2008 r2 on it to play around with.

I have a qnap 451+ for my security cameras.

Heyyy, that's pretty good!

Do you have an UPS for it also?

Have you ever done virtualization? VMware or HyperV or Linux KVM/QEMU? Your server supports ESXI 5 - it's really great to play around with that if you haven't yet.
 
No ups currently. I have tinkered with virtualization but nothing serious. I have kibda looked at ESXI 5 but haven't done anything with it.
