Forgive me if this is too much of a dumb question, but it keeps bothering me and I guess you guys will know the answer.

Why is it that when I plug a microphone into a one PC it works fine and when I plug it into another it is so quiet (even with the record volume turned up to max) that it is not useable.

The problem comes because I am always setting up Skype for people. I have a stock of desktop mics, on some PCs I get a great result, on other PCs the people at the other end have to turn their speakers to max and can still barely hear.

What’s going on here? Should I abandon normal mics and only user USB ones?
 
A lot of PC's I work on do not have the button for Mic boost. I am guessing that is a function of the sound card installed.
 
It is a common feature. Not sure if it's sound card specific, but you can check by going to your Control Panel >> Sounds and Audio Devices >> click Advanced under device volume >> click Advanced under Options at the top >> click Advanced under the Microphone column (Make sure the Microphone column is enabled). Mic Boost option should be in there.
