What dictates HDCP?

Hi

Could someone please explain what determines an LCD as being HDCP? I thought that if a monitor had DVI-D that you could then make it become HDCP but when I inquired about eg.the Philip's 200W6CS as being HDCP I was told it wasn't. It has DVI-D so I don't understand. I've also been told HP's 2105f is HDCP even though it's more than a year old and has DVI-D.

Does only having DVI-D mean that you need to add various bits & pieces to end up with HDCP whereas if it says HDCP on the monitor it's a simpler process.

I'm quite confused as you can see.

I think I've probably posted a confusing post - I had a huge brainache when I typed it so never mind. Thanks for looking anyway.

There's not really much you can do to add HDCP to a DVI-D monitor yourself. The manufacturer would have that option by adding a chip that stores the protection keys and handles the handshake with other HDCP devices. So if you're looking for a monitor with HDCP, make sure it's listed in the specs.
