Hi all.

I don't plan to overclock at all when I drop my 6600 into my new system.. but with so many types and FSB speeds of DDR2 I'm confused as to what to get.

What DDR2 is optimum for normal, non-overclocked Conroe performance ?

If you're running stock speeds, good DDR2-533 (PC 4200) will suffice.

Some tight latency ram , whatever you can afford, Conroe is a very demanding CPU who needs loads of bandwidth, so tight latecy ram is something which might just be able to keep up with it.

If you can buy some tight ddr800 ,actually that would be for overclockers , buy some tight ddr667mhz, it will be perfect for conroe.

You know... I really hate all the new RAM choices. It makes it so easy to buy the wrong kind or spend too much. I wish I'd seen this thread before I dropped a bunch on two sticks of Corsair XMS2 PC 6400... I guess I coulda just gone with the PC 4200 and been just as well off.

I do plan on doing a minor overclock, so I don't know if that negates the advantage of staying with PC 4200, though.... It's all so confusing. :p

Depending on the sticks, I think some decent PC 4200 would have given you some headroom, but the Corsair PC 6400 will give you tons of it. It's also a good brand with a good warranty. You shouldn't feel bad about buying quality RAM even if you don't need all the speed.

You want LOW VOLTAGE RAM first and foremost=P By Low I mean 1.8 to 1.9V, NOT 2.0 to 2.2. You want to look for the lowest voltage DDR2-667.

RAM timmings are NOT that important=P

So far Allendale/Conroe's smart memory access for its cache and system memory makes both less critical. By that I mean 2MB doesn't loose much compared to 4MB and fast timmings are now almost a gimmick.

667/800allows extra bandwidth for PCI-E and I/O independent of the FSB. I still say 667 is better if you're not overclocking. THe heavier you use your system, the more this will help.

I post this as hindsight after buying GSkill DDR2 800 2GBZX that needs a whoppin' 2.1V at bootup and the i965's default is 1.8V and can start up with as much as 1.9v. With this much of Gap in voltage, it will NOT boot. Folks, this problem is NOT just a Gigabyte problem.

The first part you posted is correct, the second part is not. Unlike the past, you don't to limit your system to just the Bandwidth of the FSB. You want that extra bandwdith for PCI-E and I/O that accesses the IMCH independently. Intel I/O link or DMI can use up to 2GB and PCI-E can use as much as 4GB in each direction. Even if everyday use is 1.8GB in each difection and I/O is only 400MB, that's still bandwidth the processor can't use. Multi tasking and etc.. would make this easy to notice.

If someone is running a Conroe system at default speeds, PC 4200 is all that's needed. This isn't up for debate, it's a fact. The FSB is quad-pumped (1067) and the memory is dual-pumped (533). These are the default speeds for Core 2.

Also, if you had read the entire article, you'd see there is actually a performance hit from taking the memory out of the perfect syncronization with the FSB:

With the Pentium 4 the pipeline was longer and the effect of running asynchronous which increased latency was masked. Core 2 technology marked Intel's return to a shorter pipeline and thus is more similar to the Athlon XP than the Pentium 4.

I have to say that its for a very good reason , i will explain this and yes i have read this .

The reason why i say this is after reading Eclipses post on ram latencies and MHZ.

For the conroe the mhz increase is very ltlle so , this is where the latencies come in .

If you have tight latencies then your bandwidth will be a fast and tight latencied bandwidth.Most overclockers go past what there ram is rated at , i wont cos it becomes inefficient.
I have bought some DDr800 Supertalant with tight latencies and goes to ddr 1000 using these latencies.

A good overclock is where you get the max out of both.

I would not max it to 1000mhz but about 850mhz where the latencies will be tight and the speed will be fast enough for the latencies and cpu can keep up with.If i do that the laencies goes looser and loose performance, this is the reason why i have said what i have said.

I made a post on this after i overclocked the E6300 and it was regarding the Float and Int whilst overclocking the conroe.The 667mhz are at the peak in price where supply and demand factor comes into pracice and why i said tighter latency is for that reason as explained above.

I made a special thread on this after the E6300 that the looser latency is not giving me gain which i expected.

I want a good overclock and i dont want to really overclock my ram but used the lartencies to getter a better bandwidth

Overclocking using a 533mhz is quite a limiting factor, i would not advice someone to buy ddr1000 but ddr667 and loose ddr800 i would advise to buy and both are in the supply and demand rule and you are naturally at a gain.

Also for future proofing your ram with overclocking, i read the same article a long time a go and i said what about overclocking and the article puts overcloking in the bin and hardly mentions this.
 
nooh, if you refuse to acknowledge that RAM speed and timings don't mean much of anything to Conroe then I have nothing else to say to you. That's your decision to make.

Also, you just rambled for multiple sentences on overclocking when 1000 said he has no interest in overclocking. So you basically wasted your time.

As for your point on "future proofing", that's nonsense too. The multipliers on Conroe are going to keep increasing. This first generation of Conroes is the only time we're going to need massive RAM speed and high FSBs to overclock to extreme speeds. We're not going to need them when we get 10x, 11x, etc. multis again.

Conroe is a new CPU. Isn't it about time we moved on from the assumptions we used to make with the AthlonXP?
 
If you want to overclock the conroe it's good to have pc6400...

You can always run faster memory at slower speed anyways...

Just keept the memory divider to 1/1 ratio..

Yes, there is nothing to debate, you're just wrong=P ;) The FSB needs DDR2-533 and Dual Channel is equal to the Processor's FSB. Again, DMI and PCI-E accesses the IMCH or Intel Memory Controller Hub independently of the FSB. The memory controller links to each device connected to it and it scychronizes with EACH device not any ONE! That's why you can change RAM's, PCI-E, and their speed INDEPENDENTLY or LINKED! It's not about just what the processor needs, but what the SYSTEM needs.

If two channels of PC-4200 is equal to the FSB, each time something else needs memory bandwidth, the Processor looses it! That's why folks like Switches and Hate Hubs.

This is NOT any older system, this is NEW! i875 and i865 sucked at trying to run in anything but sync-modes. Any ratio used looked good but absolutely SUCKED otherwise. I agree with you on that. I still have an i875 IC7-G downstairs and can prove it. But this (almost Bug) has gotten better since the first 915 and 925. It has improved with each chipset since.

Again, most folks wouldn't notice this until the system is stressed!

It's NOT just the shorter and wider pipelines but the new tech Intel added to its Cache and how it accesses System Memory that show the most improvements. These render IMC (Integrated Memory Controller) Moot for the Desktop! Note, I didn't say Servers and yada yada. C2D hasn't started to show what it can really do in 64bit mode because WinXP-64 isn't using most of the newer features. Sure it still kicks everything's ass :)

Anyway, back to playing with my shiney new C2D!

I am a bit confused as it seems opinions are divided, but I guess the CD2 etc are new to market and we are all still in "discovery mode" in a lot of ways.

I also recently got myself a new c2d e6600 and a new mobo (gigabyte dq6) and some new memory (ocz dd2 pc6400 platinum)

cpu and mobo came pretty easily (read xtremesystems forums, saw people have probs, saw bios update, saw problems disappear...good enough) and the cpu, well i am a sucker for more cache...

the memory, that was a cause for concern with me. See, I hate to waste money as well (You could look at my mobo and say its a waste, for that money I "could" have got a 975X but I don't need/want crossfire, so meh, plus I like these heatpipes) but then to me, if I buy 2gb of "cheapish" mem for say 160 euros now and then maybe a year later, I wish to buy ram again cause my new kentsfield runs with ddr 667/800, well, I either use it, but be slow (nope), try and sell it (pain) or buy new stuff, essentially wasting the 160 I spent. So I spent 200 euros and got that ocz 800mhz mem. It'll last me for the forseeable future on this platform, which is good enough for me.

40 euros extra for a bit of piece of mind, no worries.

Note that I also like to play around with some mild overclocking so it helps as well. But I normally sit somewhere close to stock.
 
is 1:1 the best even at stock speeds? my current ratio is 1:2 (ram twice as fast as cpu)
as far as i can tell the lowest ratio you can go(at least on my 965 ds3) is 1:1 anything else and the ram is faster than the cpu(cuz i have dual channel on,2 sticks of 1gb each)

btw i have a D930 if that matters.
