My home machine is in my sig just like everyone else, but I never see anyone's work machine in their sig. The only reason I'm interested is because no one I know has had a choice in what their machine is at work. (They have the ability to suggest upgrades and stuff, but not to actually buy them.) My machine was assigned to me, and I want to see what kinds of crap everyone else has.

I'm an IT Supervisor at a law firm, and this is my work computer:
HP Pavilion 505n
Celeron 2.2 GHz
256MB DDR
60GB HD
Intel i845 Graphics
Windows 2000 SP4

It's also worth noting that I have three other inferior machines hooked up to a KVM, but the one above is where I do all my work. I would guess that alot of you probably have laptops as your work machines. Hopefully you guys have better gear than me. This box is starting to show its age. Probably needs more RAM.

AS a IT technician, I have the privilege to get the best machines and my current one is a Dell Optiplex GX280 with a P4 3.2 with HT and 512 Mb of RAM. I also use a Dell Latitude D810 laptop as well for my assignments outside my workplace.

IT technician/systems administrator at a placement:

Viglen
P4 3Ghz
512Mb RAM
Intel inegrated graphics controller
80Gb HDD
CDRW drive
19" TFT monitor <----- the only positive

Reason for the bog standard specs is due to the networking system so all the workstations have to be the same.

office2405.jpg

(CPU & scanner under desk)

Dell 4550 (845 chipset)
Pentium 4 3.06Ghz HT
Asus 6200
2x512Mb HyperX 3200
30Gb 7200rpm Harddrive
Logitech Cordless Ergo Duo (KB & mouse)
Dell 2405FP monitor
Dell 3000cn COLOR LASER printer
HP Scanjet 4100c

if I were an actual full-time employee, I'd be given this:

Dell Latitude D610/600: 1.6ghz Pentium-M, 1gb RAM, 40gb hdd, DVD/CDRW. 14.1" XGA

The systems we're sending out as replacements are Dell Optiplex GX620s: 2.8ghz P4, 1gb RAM, 80gb, DVD-ROM.

As it is, I'm just an intern.
Celeron 2.4ghz, 256mb RAM, 40gb hdd, CD-ROM.

IBM M51 - Main Rig

Crappy Intel onboard graphics (1 LCD)
Triple 17" IBM LCDs
Logitech MX700 & Elite Keyboard
Biometric fingerprint scanner

IBM M51 - Test Station

3.2GHz P4 HT
512MB RAM
40GB Western Digital SATA
Crappy Intel onboard graphics
15" Hyundai L50 LCD

1GB RAM
100GB 5400rpm HDD
ATI Radeon 7500
Combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Wireless A/B/G
Biometric fingerprint scanner

I think you can see we're an all-IBM shop... :)

Dell optiplex GX280:
3.4GHz Prescott :(
1GB RAM
160GB Sata
19" LCD + 15" LCD
x300SE card (so I can run dual monitors)

iMac: (for troubleshooting the few Mac users we have)
350MHz
1GB RAM
OS 10.4.5 :D

HP xw4300 Workstation
Pentium 4 3.6gHz
2GB RAM
36 GB (15000 rpm) Ultra320 SCSI
73 GB (15000 rpm) Ultra320 SCSI
NVIDIA Quadro FX1400
HP LP2065 20" Flat Panel

Still wish I had more horsepower...

I'm a Network Specialist. We got lucky that there was a burning issue with the Opti 620's and Dell made good and replacing them with Precision 380's, so that's what I'm using now :D

I just moved to a new department and recieved a new HP system. Not sure of the model, but its a P4 3.0 w/ 1GB DDR2 RAM, 80GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD combo drive and a 19" CRT.

Optiplex GX620
3.8ghz Pentium 4
2 gigs memory
500gig hard drive space(2x250)
ATI X600 Video Card
Dual Dell 1905FP Displays

Still too slow for me because we run virtual machines on our computers, need to get dual core :D

IBM M51
P4 3Ghz
512Mb RAM
Intel integrated graphics
80Gb HDD
CDRW drive
DVD burner
21" CRT monitor <----- slowly dying

Care to elaborate ? We got 10 new GX620 boxes unopened and if it is a issue, i could call Dell and bitchslap him after his GX270 capacitors issues on all of the 250 PC :(

At work i have some POS dell SFF pc that sucks, the guy that ordered these machines was a dumbass and some how im running XP Pro with 128mb of ram.... Figure that one out... Anyways the computer keeps crashing every time i use it, so i just use my own personal laptop:

Asus S5n
1.5ghz P-M
768 mb RAM
80gig HDD
CD-RW/DVD Drive
12inch screen

Now we are going to be ordering new computers soon, and this is what i am going to be getting myself:

Asus Vintage2 Bareones
Pentium D 2.8 ghz Dual Core
1 gig DDR2
40gig HDD
DL DVD-RW drive
Some workstation graphics card for the PCI-E slot

Dell Optiplex GX260
2.8Ghz
1 gig ram
80 gig hd
2001FP

It does office and database work just fine.

Dell Optiplex GX280

In tech support we are usually the last to get upgrades, and that usually means hand me down pcs. not this time around though.

I'd just like to note that so far I'm seeing mainly Intel processors. AMD needs some business market penetration (as in workstations...they're obviously covered for servers and high-end rigs). They can't live on enthusiast/server/other profits alone. :(

seems that way. We almost exclusively deal with dell for everything computer/printer related.

Compaq/HP D530
P4 2.4 GHz
1GB (4x256MB) PC2700
120GB + 80GB HDDs
48X CD-ROM
48x CDRW
21" Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT
JBL stereo speakers

Nothing overly fancy, but it gets the job done.

Compaq NC8000 Laptop
P4-M 1.6GHz
1GB DDR
64MB Radeon 9600 Pro Mobile
15.4" LCD
Dual CDRW drives

Runs great and actually opens apps faster than my desktop does.

Same here, we usually deal exclusively with Dell or IBM since we are dealing thru a distributor and this one happens to stock on IBM or middle-man for Dell only.

However, about printers, we are more varied by using Lexmark, HP and Dell.

Acer Aspire 3000 Laptop

3000+ Sempron
768MB Ram
80GB HDD
CD-RW/DVD
15" Widescreen
Logitech MX700+Wireless KB
54Mb Wifi

QJ

Dell Optiplex GX260

2.26 P4, 256 MB, 18.5 GB formatted cap hard drive, win2K pro, Intel EXTREME-ly crappy graphics.

QFT

Even the IT guy at my work tried to hash up that AMD cpu's aren't stable enough for use in a business environment. He said that right before he mentioned a K6 he had and I punched him in the eye. (Just kidding about the punching part).

If they could get a deal with Dell, that would be quite a boost for AMD sales but AMD just can't seem to get Dell on board. Hmmm, law suit, anyone?

Dell d610. 1.6Ghz, 2GB of RAM, 60GB drive (so slow though)
Docking station hooked up to 24" dell widescreen (gotta love coding at 1920x1200)

I guess technically our server counts as a work pc too.

IBM p660 with 12 or so 18GB fiber channel drives. Tons o' RAM and 4 750MHz processor. Runs Unix/D3

I could have a desktop also, but I prefer to only have one machine to work on.

Well with the Alienware acquisition last week, a lot of folks are suspecting it was a first step to getting AMD into Dell (though who knows when it will happen). But I do think it's inevitable that Dell will pick up AMD. Once AMD and Dell link up, I'm guessing we'll see 50% or higher AMD penetration within 3 years of the deal. AMD processors are faster and cheaper. AMD will probably always come in for less $$ than Intel because their corporate structure isn't as bulky and they will stay a smaller company for a long time.

HP Visualize X4000 Workstation
Dual Xeon 2.4's
4 GB RAMBUS
3x 147 GB SCSI drives

Compaq Deskpro EN SFF
P3 1 GHz
512 MB
40 GB

IBM Thinkpad R40
PM 1.3 GHz
1 GB DDR
80 GB HD

Network Administrator here.

I have a 2.2ghz p4 laptop 512mb ram

2 workstations
Shuttle XPC
2.8ghz Celeron 1gb RAM running WinXP sp2
250gb HD

2nd one is

2.8ghz p4 1gb RAM running Gentoo
250gb HD
No frills on any of these.

using a Optiplex GX260, 512, 2.8 Northwood, 40 GB Maxtor, ATI Radeon VE 32 MB, cd burner, 17 inch ultra sharp with the gamma turned up some. I does fine and the tower is silent. My AG monitor at home looks better though.

yeah, this school only buys Dell. They used to buy Gateway, but they bought the grade Z ones, not the better towers and workststions. That is the only reason we don't have any AMD on campus, besides the dorms which are prolly 98% AMD. I hear Dell is actually selling AMD cpu, per Max PC magazine. true ? so they bought Alienware ? out of this world ! ha, and I bet they screw the look up totally, prolly have the tower look like a friggin elephant or something. Maroons.

4GB of rambus...that probably cost more than a semester of college tution

(if I'm thinking what rambus cost...)

I'm an "IT Support Specialist", and our shop runs all Dell Precision 350 Workstations -- P4 2.8Ghz, 512MB RDRAM (fugggg), Radeon VE 32MB video card, 4x DVD/RW drive, and a 36GB Ultra320 10krpm Seagate Cheetah HD. It runs well enough, but its no dual opteron system (heheh, I just built my own workstation, and I am loving it)

I work for a IT refusbishing/recycling company, not much cost to get this kind of stuff :D

But yeah the resale value of 4 GB of RAMBUS is about $2,500.

It's true - Dell is selling like 6 AMD PIB on their site - but nothing else. and of course you can't pop an AMD into any current Dell SKU.

I'm with you on the Delienware thing - it's a mess.
