What causes artifacts ?

I have a 9800 pro that has some artifacts. I have just added the arctic cooler rev 3.

Theres not hundreds of them, they only appear on some tests in 30Mark01 or in CS-S.

Any idea what the problem is ?

I tried putting the stock hsf on and stil the same problem ?

Artifacts can be caused by anything from bogus drivers, strained AGP ports, bad video RAM, or a weak GPU. You can usually distinguish between hardware and software artifacts by running the artifact test in ATITool. If you see the artifacts in the test (they show up as yellow areas) and you can get rid of them by underclocking, then you have a hardware problem of some sort on the video board. You can underclock the GPU and video RAM individually to figure out which is the culprit. The only problem with ATITool is that it only seems to use DirectX 7 draws so if your artifacting problem is caused in the pixel or vertex shader part of the GPU, then it won't find them. But in any case, ATITool is a good way to find some of the more common causes.

Generally speaking: if hardware is the problem, artifacts which appear as long straight lines or two-dimensional grids of small dots tend to be bad video RAM, and large checkboard patterns tend to be bad GPUs (although there are plenty of exceptions). With really big messes, it's hard to tell.

I have an older version of an arctic cooler on my 9700 Pro and it seems to be very effective. It's certainly better than the stock cooler which came with the board.
 
I get yellow artifacts when running cs-s. I'm at work now so i cant test it yet..
 
what could be a cause of your problem is if you used AS5 then it might be somewhere you don't want it to be.

Clean your video card thoroughly. Use 99% Ispropyl and compressed air.

First clean the card completely everywhere. Even in the the mem. cracks. They could go in there while you're cleaning with the isopropyl.

After that using compressed air blow all over the card even through the mem. cracks and look for blown out as5 ... clean that area using isopropyl.

Don't be careless .. you need to clean it perfectly well

After 1hr of cleaning plug it in and check if it still artifacts.
 
there might have been some of one of the chips on the gpu. could that be a cause ? and if it is, is it likely to be perm damage?
 
see artifacts are from people who died along time ago in like acient egypt or elsewhere and left these lingering items from there lives such as pots, arrow heads, swords, etc etc. The dead people come back from the netherworld in order to claim back their "artifacts" and in so doing usually end up flying through your computer and causing it PHR3AK OUT!!!

have you tried different catalyst drivers? hows the contact between your as5 and video card? Have you ever over clocked your video card to extreme levels? These are all very important questions that need to be answered before we can really start to help you out man.
 
So the artifacts appeared after changing heatsinks? Oops. I should have read your original post more carefully.

If you use arctic silver then people worry about where it ends up because it's a conductor whereas most heatsink grease is an insulator. But that stuff doesn't actually conduct very well. It is a bit capacitive which can load down the chip I/Os and slow them down. If that's the problem then you probably haven't caused any permanent damage unless you can't clean it up. Occasionally you can also create little metal splinters while changing heatsinks (especially if you mess with the shim) and those can cause more serious problems. Personally, I just use regular heat sink grease (arctic silver ceramique) which is an insulator so you never have to worry where it ends up.

I've never overclocked, and have tried omega and standard drivers :(

I'll have to check it tonite.
