(posting here because it pertains specifically to servers with lots of drives, move to case section if you feel its better there)

Wondering what case everybody uses for their servers.
Im switching to laptop + server pretty soon, and starting to look for a cheap case to move my hard drive array into. Room for 9 drives required, the cheaper the better (i have the PSU).
Ideas? What do you guys use?
 
9 drives really means that you won't get cheap. Your options are getting a case that will take 9 full drives in 3.5" bays. This will mean a $200+ Lian Li. Alternatively, you could get an 8 or 7 drive case and get some enclosures or rails to use the space in the 5.25" bays. That being said, you probably want to have something that is made to handle the heat that 9 drives will make.

Probably your best bet is to sell some of your drives and get larger capacity ones. That is, unless you're using 500's or 750's already and if that is the case then you shouldn't care about a cheap case.
 
Coolermaster stacker with three 4in3x5,25 drive bay cages. That still leaves you three free 5.25 inch bays and you'd have excellent cooling on the drives and I still think it will come up cheaper than the lian-li case.
 
I'd have to agree with the stacker recommendation. If not that, then look into the Armor case from... Thermaltake? Thermalright?

I have, and use, a Supermicro SC942i rackmount chassis with two 5-in-3 bays for hard drives. It has 9 drive bays normally, but costs upwards of $250 for the case/psu combo alone.
 
heh. 5 drives current, 4 more for raid expansion. No PSU needed, the true2 430W is doing fine.

stackers are fucking expensive.
Maybe get a cheap case and mod for HDD bays? Maybe redo the entire HDD/front drive system from scratch... itd just have 1 optical...

If heat isn't an issue in your environment (both with the room and with the CPU choice), this or something like it could work...you use the 4 internal and 2 external 3.5" bays for HD's, and use 3 of the 4 5.25" bays for the other drives.

Side note - what sort of drives will you have in there?
 
Currently the 4 seagate (?) 300GiB drives. Will be adding more as required.
Im basically selling off the most powerful parts of the desktop, getting a laptop as a primary machine, and converting the remaining desktop parts into a server.

Going back to the A8N-E (as it has a x4 slot), so Ill be getting a cheap 3000+ to power it. Will run torrents off it, fileserve, etc.
