what card to pick???

Either of the 9800's would likely give the best performance. The 256bit pro's will probably be dropping in price soon as will the 6600GT's to below 200. Might consider one of those if you're willing to save up a little more for them. You'll see a significant difference in performance and you won't need to upgrade again so soon.
 
Stay away from Powercolor. Been trying to get assistance from them for the last month now on a card that had a fan die. They havent even responded to a single email.
 
Avoid the Fx series.. I'm pretty sure even the 128bit 9800 is faster than the 9600. I agree with Bossnoodle, if you can wait just a bit for prices to drop, or come up with a few more $, go for a 6600.
 
I agree with BossNoodleKaboodle wait for a radeon 9800 with a 256bit i just got one and have played on a 128bit there is a decent diff. and i would stay away from nvidea in comparisons with friends who have so called equal cards my ati owns even just on stock settings

thats "nvidia" and yes, their FX series sucked, but to stay away from nvidia this generation is silly. the 6600GT is currently the best bang for buck @ 200 and under; its whoopin up on the 9800p.

to the OP: investing in a 9600 or 128bit 9800 (256bit is still good, and dont even think about the FX series) would be a bit waste of money at this point IMO. prices should be dropping soon, watch after xmas sales. also, on dec 15, the PCIe cards from nvidia are *officially* for sale, so the 6600GT could possibly be in higher quantity (i say this cause it might be oficially released at the same time) and be sittin right at $200

edit: are you still running the tbird? if you are and you arent upgrading any time soon, even a 9600 is overkill, depending on your board... is it the older kt133a chipset, or a newer nf2, kt600, ect? the older skt A chips still perform well.. if you have a newer chipset, if not, htey absolutly suck, and you will not be happy with your new found "performance"
 
naw, im runnin an amd xp @ 2.15ghz on a soltek SL-75FRN2-L. currect vid card is a 8500.

Except for the fact that the 6600GTs (AGP) aren't under $200. The cheapest ones are $220-225.

GameVE has a bunch of AGP 6600GTs on their site, and most of them are around $225.

I'd wait untill they are a little below $200 until I'd get one.
