what can cause artifacts?

I know overclocking, overheating, bad capacitor, but what would cause TWO brand new cards (I picked up two brand new 4850 1GB from the best buy deal) to show artifacts? I switched them out one at a time. The first one crashed on steam's stress test and I had to restart my computer. It happened several times actually.

The second one passed steam's stress test with 296fps average at 2048x1152 resolution, then while playing it shows a bunch of artifacts.

I had a 5770 before I installed those two cards and never had any issues besides random gray screen crashes.

Anyone know what could be the issue?

My set up:

Windows 7 Pro 64bit
AMD X2 550 (unlocked to quad core)
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600
WD Black 640GB in RAID 0

Thanks

What are you seeing and what resolution????

I'm assuming they are stock clocked??

Maybe that's why they were on sale???

LOL,

I hope that's not why they are on sale.

I am gaming at 2048 x 1152 resolution.

They are stock clocked and not overheating.

with the first card, it was all these gray, black, white, green, scattered lines horizontally and vertically. A big mess that covered the whole screen. I had to reboot.

The second card showed checkered boxes (not the checkered purple and black boxes common with playing CS Source). The checkered boxes cover 1/3 the screen and will go invisible and then visible again. The checkered boxes are gray, black, and a chartreuse color. I didn't have to reboot.

Thanks

First of all, what kind of artefacts? Miscoloured pixels are usually memory overheating, and misplaced vertices and miscoloured textures (usually black) are signs of GPU overheating.

How are the temps in your case? The 48xx range tend to run really hot so it's possible a hot case could be causing cooling issues. What happens if you force manual fan control and set it at 100%, re run the tests like that and see if you artefact.

Since both are doing it, it seems likely that the culprit is something common to both cards, rather than the cards themselves, my first guess is temps, next would be PSU. I'd definately try the cards in someone esles machine if possible, that will narrow down the scope somewhat.

It could be the drivers, try a full wipe and reinstall of the drivers.

I can't say I've seen those types of artefacts before, I'd take a guess at maybe software instead going by what you said. It might be worth removing all the driver files completely, booting into safe mode and running a driver cleaner tool, then rebooting and installing a fresh download the latests cats, reboot again.

This is my thought also.....for both cards to do it is strange, so it makes sense that the drivers might be corrupt

If the cards are in Crossfire, you attached the bridge, correct???

It may be drivers.....but if you had ATI in place before you changed to the 4850s that should only require a restart and adjustments in the CCC for Crossfire.

If that's the case and all is well, reload the drivers......if that doesn't work, take them back.:D

Here is a screenshot of what I'm seeing:

I've reinstalled drivers many times, and it hasn't helped.

I find it odd that it could happen to two cards.
