i built a comp for my sister
(sonata, nf7-s v.2, 1gb of crucial DDR400, 120gb HDD, 72gb raptor, geforce 4 440 mx)
and shipped it to her in virginia, she just called me and sent me these pics, can sombody please explain to me how the HELL this can happen without any damage to the outside of the case (except for a few scrathes). and more importantly any ideas on how to get the drives out

Take the PSU out first I guess and then pull the drives out through the back of the cages, they're already halfway there. Damn, sorry to hear about what happened, I'm guessing the package was hurled around a lot during shipping, with some amazing for I must say!

problem is to take the psu out you gotta get the heatsink out, and for that you have to reapply theremal material and she dosent trust herself with stuff like that

after what I've seen on various forums about UPS shipping, I would almost rather use USPS, FEDEX, or Airborne Express than risk a UPS shipment.

UPS will ALWAYS blame any damage on insufficient packing, no matter how well it was packed. You could double box it with 4 inches of packing between each box and the contents inside the inner box...and they would still blame it on packaging...

IMO, UPS is only usefull for stuff you don't care about, pillows, or stuffed animals. I wouldn't even trust them with an envelope full of documents.

Whole computers take a good deal of skill in order to be sufficiently packed. The internal components require special precautions independent of the outside packaging. With that in mind, UPS could well be right for most people's claims. It's not like you can just throw stuffing into a box and call it sufficient. Even brute-force methods must follow the laws of physics.

yes, but it is funny how the manufactures such as Compaq, HP, and Dell all only utilize about 4 inches of styrofoam packing for all their systems...including servers (IBM uses less packing...must be over-faithfull in their products)...and out of the approx 800 machines we've received at work over the past 4 years, the only ones we received with any kind of substantial damage were shipped via UPS. I know the other freight companies didn't exactly handle those boxes like they were full of eggs....and quite a few showed up with smashed in corners, but none of them showed up in the condition we got from UPS, which had loose CPU hsf's, loose hdd's, cracked front bezels, etc. It was like the ones from UPS were purposefully dropped from any height they could get them to, or drove into, or played "box bowling" with.

We no longer ship anything we care about (hmmm...which happens to be just about everything) through UPS because of the way we've received (and I've refused) shipments from them.

Sad that UPS doesn't try harder to correct this problem since it seems so apparent. Seems being the key word here.

The unit looks like it took a hell of a hit on it’s back. Were it me I’d want the whole thing back and do a complete tear down. With that much impact the weight of the HSF alone could have done serious damage not only to the CPU core but the motherboard as well.

The optical drives would also be of major concern; they don’t like that kind of abuse.

Such a nice machine ruined by a company that has long since lost my business for just that very reason. Hope you had is insured big time.

I feel your pain man

don't think fedex will do a better job....I got a case too that was so damaged, it had crack on the front bezel and my front I/O where the usb and all was completely ripped off.

Damn the f**k up your case man.........Hope they are not doing that to my LCD....

UPS is the hardest on packages, period.
Two times ive received packages with literal tires marks on the them, suiqshed flat

the only thing brown can do for me is to flush without clogging

Shit. That really sucks, I'd say tell her to ship it all back to you (via someone much better) and check all the hardware. Never use UPS again, that just sucks.

i find that 90% of the time damaged packages were shipped via ground services either FedEx or UPS...

my suggestions? always ship air, UPS, FedEx whoever, ive never had a problem with anything shipped via air ymmv

It was moving really fast, and then it stopped. This is because they literally throw the packages from the conveyer belts into the trucks.

Yup and they tear down the trucks when they come into a hub. What that means is they open the back of a truck to unload it, one of the guys grabs a package on the bottom and pulls it out causing everything on top to fall out of the truck and onto the dock.

At least my buddy that used to work for UPS said that's how they used to do it but by looking at that case it seems as if it's still common practice.

Sorry about your pain bro

I shipped my computer to college my freshman year via ups. What a mess, they lost it for two weeks, and then when it did show up they had managed to bend the case into a nice arch. I yelled at them on the phone for a good week not putting up with any of their bull untill I was finaly reimbersed for the damage they did. So if you insured it I'd start yelling at them now.

i worked in the shipping dept of a place a few summers ago, and i used to watch the ups guys roll up and just throw boxes into the back of the truck.. also we kept getting these long weedwhacker shafts bent in half by ups.. i would say one out of 3 that we shipped would come back damaged.. so we started shipping them fedex, and not a single one came back damaged...

i also had a friend that worked at ups.. he would purposely break stuff.. they played baseball with boxes of flourescent light tubes.. they heavier the box was they would encounter the higher they would try to drop it from.. needless to say he is kinda an asshole and doesn't care about other people's stuff.. but at the same time.. ups never fired him....

also, you probably can just have her unscrew the rails from the sides of those optical drives and then they should come out the front.. and i hope you already have gotten on th ephone with ups... persistance is the key with them...

one interesting way i found to ship things is greyhound.. they don't have the sheer volume of packages to move where they could do stuff like letting huge stacks of boxes fall from trucks and such...

This is the reason Dell uses DHL for all their replacement parts. I've been a field tech for Dell for six weeks and EVERY box I've received from DHL looks like it's brand new. There aren't even any scuffs on the labels when I receive the box. I don't think DHL/Airborne has much of a problem at all with damaging packaged goods. I've received a ton of stuff from newegg via FedEx and FedEx seems to be second best in not fucking up your stuff. I'm rather amazed that IBM sends me their warranty parts via FedEx or DHL but I return ALL of them via UPS.

woahhh

the worst service i use is ups and i never use it again unless im forced to... ive received shipments with the box creased to almost halfway (inside were ok tho cus it had a lot of space and was just a nibbler and some resistors)

i say u call up ups and give them a hard time or something :D , jk.... or at least try to file a report or complaint to whoever delievered it

i never ever use ups to ship anymore... i just stick with usps because their boxes come in perfect shape... also fedex ships well with the ocassional scuff marks and slightly damaged cardboard boxes

after reading one of the previous post, im hearing DHL is good?, is the price decent?, if im hearing its got good service, i might switch to using DHL instead altho usps is doing well for me now

hello new here but i agree with all you that ups is not very good at delivering packages but i find that fedex is faster and i have not had a problem with them

Shipping refurbs via UPS??? o_O
Now there is a thought...
If you're late on something, ship it via ups and blame brown?
Brown... to cover up the dirt?
Wonder if the CEO of UPS uses UPS??? ...

I've gotton a few things from Dell shipped via DHL and the boxes were all dented in and one looked like someone had kicked a hole right in it. Overall though, I'd pick them over UPS. UPS sucks ass, almost anything I get from them has been beat to shit and they overcharged me when I shipped something with them via PayPal and I never got my $60 back, b/c I couldn't prove I had entered the right dimensions. Fucking piece of shit cocksuckers.

If he does, I bet his packages are marked as such and thus get treated like golden eggs. :p
then next time i send a package via ups, imma write my name as UPS CEO Wayne and watch my package get sent thru without a scratch

Uh oh, I should recieve my new case tomarrow and it was shipped via UPS! Except it was empty so I doubt they could have messed anything up.

I have built and shipped a few computers via ups, usps, and fedex. I fill the insides of the computers with popcorn so that when they do toss it around things don't move too much but I have had a computer shipped to me via ups and ended up the heatsinks falling off and the drives looking the same as yours. just the price you pay sometimes.

would having your shipment insuranced do anything incase your stuff was damaged like that?

was yours insuranced?

It now wants to change my mind on getting a case online.

UPS has taken good care of my parts when I ordered my computer's parts online. Fedex also handled them good also, but since I know where's the UPS shipping place here, then I can just pick up my packages from there.

Sorry to hear about your lost man.

the only time it rained last spring my ups guy left an lcd on the side of the house right next to the gutter, thankfully no dmg other than the box itself. such bad business. id definitely get ups on the phone and bitch, just not right.

I don't know why IBM always makes me return ship UPS. I find it strange but no matter how the parts got to me UPS is my return waybill. More than likely IBM doesn't care how long it takes for broken parts to get back to them, just that they get there.

they probably have a deal with IBM in which every shipment that is sent to IBM thru ups, IBM gets a percentage or something

No joke man, 3 years ago I shipped out a PC and it ended up just like that! Not a single dent on the box but the PC was tore up!

The Lian-Li case I used (PC-60 I think) had the whole back of it dented in. As such, the soundcard got all f'd up. The exhaust fan would no longer fit. The ATX cable from the PSU to the motherboard was unplugged. The HD screws had come loose and it was floating around. Random cables got unplugged.

It was a $2500 PC (not even including the monitor). It had SCSI, GF3 (high end at the time), etc.

Anyhow, I went to ship it and it cost me over $100 to ship, 2 day air since "Air gets handled a lot less and is more likely arrive in the same condition" (which I was told since I voiced my concerns over UPS's quality). Anyhow, I insured the thing for $2500.

Once it arrives at the customers place and she opens it, I get a call asking me "why doesn't it turn on? And is it supposed to look dented in the back?" I went berserk. Since I had a 3rd party shipper (one of those lame little 'Weship4u' places which I'll never use again) to ship it for me, they were my "broker" and had to call UPS for me.

Anyhow, UPS refuses to pay anything. Improper packing they say. I shipped it in the exact same Lian-Li box it was shipped to me in (via FedEx of course). The only difference was that it now had parts on it.

To make a long story short, the woman didn't take them to court since it would've cost more than it was worth. UPS f'd up and didn't pay a dime. The woman is still using the PC to this day. She had a local technician up there look at it and repair what he could.

Fuck UPasS and the teamster-mafia horse they ride in on.

Sigged. Due to the fact that I love UPS  Never used them, never will. My dad gets like. . .envelopes from them but nothing big. I told him UPS is a bs pos company, but meh, he doesn't care

My automotive mail order company used to ship by UPS. For about 3 or 4 years we used them almost exclusively. A few years ago..about 2 to 3, dont recall exactly , we started getting a few damaged items returned..then more. When we made claims on them at first it was fine but once it started getting to be more they started refusing claims "insufficient packaging". Asked what constituted decent packaging they said fully wrapped in foam or bubble wrap, top bottom and sides. Yeah right. a 50 buck order taking half a hour to pack we might as well close shop right away.

So we switched to Fedex. Same shipping cost. Almost identical computer system , 1 day faster to most places from us in Washington state and they very rarely damage stuff.

Our Canadian branch uses UPS and they jsut in hte last 6 months or so have started to have the prob we had in the US. More and more damage , started refusing claims. Only prob is no Fedex in Canada. We may have to go to DHL although they cost more.

In Canada we ship some moldings in sewer pipe and they come back damaged, Weve driven over that sewer pipe and didnt damage it. Fucktards.

This all seems to have started around when UPS went public about 3(maybe) years ago. They were, up until then, the largest privately held company in America. Go public, sell ur options and fuck the customer in the ass seems to have been the model they followed. And theyve been following it with gusto.

man.. ups really played soccer with that package.. I ship with fedex all the time, and haven't had a single issue..

depending on where your sister lives in virginia, I'd be willing to help her our in the repair/reassembly of the machine if she would like. i'm only an hour or so from VA..
