If you want to get something cheaper, but still good, below say a 9600XT or Pro, what to get? Would like a 5200 Ultra be better than the lower end ATI?

the 9600pro and xt have one major (currently useful advantage); anisotropic filtering. they also yield acceptable performance at dx9.

the 5200 sacrifices acceptable framerates, to obtain dx9 functionality. the horrible framerates plus subpar non dx9 performance makes the card not worth a buy.

the best cheap current tech (dx9) card on the market is the 9600np.

but as there arent many full dx9 games out yet, you buy a dx9 generation card for its performance in aa and anisotropic filtering. the 9600 doesnt do really great at anisitropic filtering or framerates, but it works.

so your best alternative to not waste money is to go for a very fast dx8 card, since you wont be able to afford one for the dx9 improvements and the (most usable option of) anisotropic filtering.

the best cost vs performance dx8 card out there is the
ti4200

You do realize the 4200 completely slaughters the 5200 and beats the 5600 most of the time, right? If overclocked to 4400/4600 speeds, it would be as fast or faster than a 9600pro in OpenGL games and some DirectX games. Sure, if you want 16x AA and 64x AF it might not be the best card possible, but neither will the 9600 be.

do yourself a favor and check out the [h] for sale/for trade forum...

They (ti4200's) can be had for around $60-75... if $100 is a must then a ti4600, 5600, or 5600U can be had for around that...

Heh, I just picked up a 5700NU for a friend for $110 like 3 wks ago...

:)

The Ti 4200 is worth considering.

I got a Ti 4400 and score 10k in Mad Onion's benchmark (just to give you a number to look at - we all know benchmarks are iffy).

But as soon as I start turning on AA and AF things get a bit laggy. UT2k3 runs in fine @ 800x600 with 2 x AA and 2 x AF - any higher res and it starts to slow down a lot (AMD 1800+ CPU). Again - this is just to give you some idea on performance.
