Well i've got my I7 up and running so now its time for a new video card (or 2), will be upgrading from a 8800ultra, rest of specs in sig.

I Was thinking 4850 crossfire until i saw the 4770 ,and it looks pretty darn good for crossfire. Keep in mind i will be overclocking as much as possible, it also comes to mind the 4770 only has 512mb. I game at 1680 x 1050.

So would it be better to buy a 4870 1gb or save for a 4890 1gb...?, i'm really loving the look of the 4890 but crossfire 4850/4770 is so good performance for the price.

I'll give you the NZ prices of each card.

Ati radeon 4850 1gb - $230.06
Hightech 4850 1gb - $240.23
Powercolor 4850 1gb - $280.13

Sapphire 4770 - $227.50
Asus 4770 - $235

Ati 4870 1gb - $313.30
Hightech 4870 1gb - $328.13

Ati 4890 1gb - $413.43
Gigabyte 4890 1gb - $437.63

So i know that Asus/Gigabyte would probably be the better brands to buy, but they are significantly more expensive. I dont really know too much about the Ati brands so help in that department would be much appreciated.

I'm really wanting to go Ati this time round, i've got some love for the red team :)

Edit: sorry title should read Which Ati card.... , i've had a few atm.

Where do you live? Those prices are TERRIBLY inflated. At your resolution a 1GB 4870 would do you just fine.

4890 even thought the 4870 would do just fine and yeah your prices are scewed . 1gi versionsof course

Well i live in New Zealand, so with the exchange rate the 4890 would be:
$1 NZ Dollar = $0.6285 US dollars
4890 - $413.43 NZ Dollars = $259.84 US dollars

Still probably expensive :(, anyone wanna help me import a card :p

I don't think you really want to spend all that money shipping to a total stranger do you? lol Yeah, it is a lot more expensive to get computer parts in Australia and New Zealand than a lot of other places :(

Keep the 8800 Ultra in your PC for now. When the NEW cards come out splurge on them instead.

An 8800 Ultra is plenty at 1680x1050 right now for 90%+ of titles. Wait for the DX11 cards and save up, as risqu3 said. You'll be kicking yourself if you spend on current gen hardware now.

The only problem with my 8800ultra is that it was overheating so i modded it and it takes up 3 slots, would prob need 4th slot free so fans get air.

It's a bandaid-fix. You could also consider something like an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 8800 to solve the overheating thing.

Ok well my 8800ultra died again tonight a few weeks after performing the oven trick, so i need something now.

I think maybe going for a 4850/4770, not too expensive and can upgrade once the new cards come out.

What do you think?

How important is gaming to you right now? I'd stick with a 4350/4550 and upgrade when the new cards are out.

I dont know if newegg.com or zipzoom fly ship to New Zealand, but I honestly think you could survive on a 4830 or 4850 at 1920x1200 if you really wanted to, and here in the states we have seen the 4850 for as low as $65 usd (again im not sure if you can get rebates) but still maybe spend 85 now.... and see if that holds you over then maybe if you want upgrade when the new cards come out.

Fyi I have a Gigabyte 4830 and it does everything I want on my 24" 1920x1200 monitor at pretty good fps....

If you want i can help you buy a video card from canada, and ship it to you.
