Hi guys,

Im building a new system and i need to get a good reliable hdd. Which manufacturer should i go with out of Maxtor, Segate Barracuda and Western Digital?

Pls help me, its really important....i need a drive that will not crap out on me easily because i do a lot of hdd intensive work where there is a lot of saving/imporintg/exporting and so on of huge files...

As long as you stick with Seagate, Maxtor, or Western Digital, you will have as good a chance as any. HDDs die...from all companies, so you can't ever be 100% sure...that's why you back up important data. I've always been a big fan of Western Digital, but just stick with one of those three.

I've had hard drives of all brands crap out on me. I have bought maybe 40 hard drives o so in my life. Your asking for a hard drive that is gauranteed not to die...and that doesn't exist. As I said twice before, and will say again....stick with one of the three main brands, and you will be fine.

Make sure you have a case that offers decent cooling for the drives. This is one reason I stay with either Lian Li or Coolermaster. HDD failures are unavoidable, but you can minimize the chances. As long as your backing your data up, it's nothing more than an annoyance.
 
i have a stack of literally 8 27gb WD hdd's in my room just sitting there 'cause they're dead. This is out of 20 or so we bought at the same time. this does not bode well for that generation of WD. however, I've heard good things about their newer disks. A month ago I would've recommended seagate unconditionally, but I just had 2 of 2 120gb seagates apparently go out on me. until I get a place to back them up, tho, I'm not gonna even try to turn them on.

i guess it's luck of the draw. buy 2 different kinds and raid-1 them.

If your looking for an unstable RAID setup, this is the way to go. If your going to run any kind of RAID array, it's by far more likely to be stable if you use identical drives.
 
I've heard that WD has had a lot of trouble with quality control lately. Could just be a rumor though....Anyhow I've also heard good things about Samsung's drives.
