Hi guys I barely ever post on the [H] but have been an avid reader for a couple years now.

Anyways, I'm going off to college soon and am looking to get a laptop. At first I was really stuborn about getting a lappy over a desktop but after a lot of research I'm excited to get one. I just need some help from the experts as to what I should get.

Firstoff I'm a big gamer, and I play all the latest and greatest stuff. I also want to be able to play any type of media I throw at it, although a DVD-R drive is unnecessary.

That being said I still want this thing to be fairly light weight so that I can easily move this thing around from dorm room to coffee shop to class. It aslo needs to have pretty good battery life.

Currently my budget is $1000 but I think my dad is going to chip in some money so that I get something that I really wan, but I can't go much higher than the $1000. If I have to buy used off of ebay I will to ensure that I'm getting something that is really useful to me.

After some research I really like Dell Inspiron 9200 and 9300 although I'm not sure about the graphics on these units. I also like Asus lappys and the Acer Ferrari is quite good looking and packs a good punch.

In terms of hardware I want something over 2Ghz, atleast a 40G harddrive, and 1gb of memory is pretty important although I could buy a lappy and then add my own memory if that is necessary.

Thanks guys, any help is appreciated.

I really like Dell Inspiron 9200 and 9300
AND

do not go together.
The Dell 9300 can be optioned with a 256MB NVIDA GeForce Go 6800 or an ATI X300 128MB BUT that is going to be in the $2000-$2500 range. You being a gamer will need a dedicated graphics chip.
So, if you really need a laptop for class get a basic budget laptop and save everything you can to get a gaming laptop.

For $1000 the best you're gonna get is a used something with ancient or integrated graphics for gaming...otherwise you can get a nice portable school work notebook for $1000.

The Inspiron 6000D (with Radeon X300) would fit the bill with a 2 year warranty no less. Don't forget to grab a coupon too. A friend of mine has a 9300 with the 128MB X300 and it plays everything we can throw at it just fine (though not as well as a desktop)

Thanks for the input. I have been looking more and did notice the 6000. I can actually get a discount from school and get a pretty nice one for around $1000 with the Radeon x300 and 1Gb of RAM. I may end up going that route. I already have a pretty nice desktop and I could just use that for gaming and get a more mobile laptop. My worry is that this desktop is becoming dated and when I buy a laptop I won't have money for upgrades for a bit, hence the wanting of a gaming laptop.

Keep the suggestions coming :)

What you have to do is wait for better deals on the 9300. I bought a 9300 w/ 17" WUXGA TrueLife, 1.6 P-M 2MB L2 Cache, 256MB 6800Go, 60GB 7.2K HDD, Intel Pro 2200 b/g, 1.25GB DDR2 PC4200

Got that for $1400 after tax.

You just have to wait for either a 35% or $750 off.

If you are going to get the x300 make sure to get the x300 w/ 128MB of ram as the 64MB ram versions have a 64-bit memmory interface and are MUCH slower. the 128MB x300 though, should perform about the same as a 9600 mobile and a 9700 mobile.

Ive nearly come full circle today in want I'm looking for in a laptop. I think what I need is a much more mobile laptop that I won't play games on. When I think of using my laptop I think of browsing, typing, and playing media. Not playing games.

With that in mind what are my option now?

I have been looking through ebay and the IBM T30 seems to be a very nice unit and fairly inexpensive even new. If I get something under a thousand I could add a new proc and more RAM to my desktop to extend it's life and have absolutely no need for a gaming laptop.

Also the Dell 600 or 700m and Asus W5 and S5 looks like solid machines as well. I don't know if I could live with myself if I went with a Dell though.

You might also look on the Dell Outlet for some cheaper deals as well.

Good luck with the decision!
