Every few months due to my use of free anti virus programs I start wondering what the new big thing is out there. I can't say that I can really complain about my current solution (Avast!) other than every time I want to do a manual virus scan, the interface makes me want to punch something. Avast wants their scanner to look like a media player...I want it to look like a virus scanner.

I would love to use NOD 32 (not free, I know) but folding is treated as a virus by NOD, and that is not of any use to any of us. What I am wondering is what anti virus is behaving best for a folder right now? AVG? Avira? Avast? Norton;)

I am looking for low overhead (of course) and quick/reliable scans. Thanks.

 
I also use Avast! and I agree it's interface sucks now.

NOD 32, like other AV software, can be set to ignore your work folders.


 
Any antivirus is bound to find threads in the F@H folder at one time or other. The trick is to add the folder in the exception list so it will not scan it. Like that, you avoid false alarms.

 
It seemed like when I was using NOD 32's 30 day trial I couldn't get it to ignore FAH. I think even with the work folder in the ignore list it caused File I/O error messages all the time. Maybe I will try again though. I really did like it.

 
For my abbreviated USD $0.02 cents worth, I have Avast Home Editition (the free one) and I've used Avast for some time. I do agree with brother Xilikon though, the current GUI (interface) does leave a lot to be desired :rolleyes:

EDIT: Oops :( I meant I agree Wheresatom, not brother Xilikon. Ahh..., wait a minute here, that didn't come out right :eek: I agree with Wheresatom about the IMO ugly interface of the current Avast Home Edition, but I do have a great respect for any opinion of Xilikon's. (does that sound right :confused:?, anyhoo I'm tired of diggin' this hole :()

I use the free avast as well. I was unable to get NOD32 to work properly with the SMP clients on 64 bit vista. I excluded everything related to SMPs and still had problems. I don't know where the ultimate problem was. Even the Eset support found the problem, but were unable to provide an actual solution.
 
I was using AVG for the last couple years when I finally moved on from my Corp. Norton AV v8.0 I was using for like over 10 years. But I think it was version 1.5.9 AVG that started killing other things on my laptop. So I uninstalled it and moved to Avast and so far it has worked great for me. I have not really messed with the gui and really hope that I shouldnt have too. Never heard of Avira till this thread and have heard good thing about nod32 (with the exception of the problem with folding).

I would just stick with what works on your main machine and if you want to try other AV's test them on a secondary box for awhile before making a move.
 
I got in on a really good Christmas special on Kaspersky IS a couple years ago for 2 licenses @ 2 years for cheap. It hasn't given me a lick of trouble.
On the non pay to play boxen I'm running both AVG and Avira and both have been excellent with Avira being slightly better with the updates and ease of use.
