Now for the problem...
It isn't doing anything. No beeps, no video. I disconnected everything except the psu (antec true550 with the case) and a single processor and no luck. I tried different RAM, swapped out the processor, different switch, even a seperate video card. No luck. The only thing I didn't test is the psu (it's EPS12V so it has the 24pin and the 8 pin) because I don't have another one. I've never got a psu from antec that was bad so I 'assumed' it was the mobo and sent it back to newegg. I got the new one today, and guess what? Right, it still didn't work. This driving me crazy so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that opterons require registered RAM. Is that what you purchased?

Why did you buy Crucial ram for a server? You would be better off going with Mushkin for an application like that.

Forgive me for asking this question but it needs to be asked.
Did you flip the switch on the back of the PSU? Test the socket you are plugging into?

It's registered ECC. I tried unregistered and it did the same thing (no beeps, no video). I wanted Mushkin, but the guy with the money likes Crucial (you know how that goes). It gets power (fan over opteron kicks on, led lights up if connected), but nothing shows up on the monitor (yes, I tried multiple monitors). The only wierd thing is that as soon as I flip the switch on the psu, the computer turns on. I thought that was a little odd, but figured it was a BIOS setting. I don't even have to have a switch attached to the mobo, it just turns on as soon as the psu switch is flipped.

I've seen that power issue before and, sorry to say, never solved it. It seemed to just go away on its own after a few days though. Strange...

So it was the switch on the back of the PSU that was the initial issue?
Does it boot now?

I'm guessing it's the psu. I'll try to rma it and see what happens. Wish me luck...lol

Ok, new psu does the same thing...anyone have any ideas? Even something to check? All the components seem good...

So does the computer boot now or no? If it is booting up as soon as the switch on the psu is turned on then it sounds as if reboot from power failure is set in the bios. I have had that happen on a couple of new builds and it freaked me out that as soon as i plugged the cable into the psu the computer booted up.

I assume u have reset the cmos and tried it again to make sure some funky settings werent set.

Still doesn't boot (or at least not visually, no video display onboard or PCI card). I left it disconnected, w/o battery, for a few days and reset the cmos. Still nothing. Would a bad CPU cause something like this? Seems highly unlikely I have 2 bad Opterons...

The price seems off to be registered ram. Just because its ECC ram dosnt mean its registered.

As a side note, if it is newegg item number N82E16820146534 that you bought, it is NOT registered (its the same price as what you listed in the same chip configuration, and happens to be ECC and not registered)

Another thing to keep in mind, is that both my tyan operon bords (a 2885 and a 2875) will beep on memory error and no memory, so theres probibly another problem in there somewhere.

Double check your start/restart/lock/led connections. haveign a led on a start or restart switch will cause the problems you have described.

Thank You! The RAM is unregistered....now I need to find some to replace it. I wish I could grab some out of the servers, but that won't be possible until late tonight...
I still think it should beep, but if this fixes it then who am I to argue. Thanks again.

It's always in the details...

The lack of a beep is why I mentioned the LED thing, i have personally had to trobuleshoot boxes where the user had done that, and needless to say the box wont boot when it thinks the reset switch is stuck on..

Back to business...
The tyan bords have a jumper to disable the onbord beeping.. disconnect any speeker you may have attatched, and check that the onbord speeker is enabled.. maby youve been dealing wiht a faulty speeker in your case or some similar nonsense?
