What a 2.4C dud I got

So after my OEM 2.4b fried (NOT due to overclocking), I ordered a 2.4c replacement mainly due to HT. My IT7 maxes at 250fsb so I figured I'd be restricted in overclock anyway until I (perhaps) got another motherboard in the future.

It arrived, and it was from China... which it seems damned near no C cpus are from. It isn't even stable at 2.8ghz... my 2.4b ran at 2.9ghz with no problems. It's not my RAM, this stuff can handle 212mhz at 2.5-7-3-3 (XMS2700), and that's only because I haven't been able to ever test it higher than that. After running it for a week UT2004 crashes within the first 5 minutes, and Prime errors out all the time at 2.8ghz. Now to try 2.7ghz. Gah. I know, I know, I'm not guaranteed any overclock, they're supposed to run at 2.4, etc etc, I'm just a bit angry that seemingly every single person on the planet that oc's their 2.4c's hits 3ghz fine while mine is a piece of crap.

What are the chances it could be the IT7? I mean, the 234 FSB it's at now is pretty close to it's 250 maximum. Is there a decent chance that the northbridge is overheating with just the passive heatsink they supply, since it's running way higher than they ever planned it to?
 
It "could" be your IT7 since it doesn't officially support 800Mhz processors. Then again, you could have just gotten a crappy 2.4c. Stranger things have happened. Know anyone with an i865/75 board to test with?
 
Yeah, but he's in the bahamas for about two weeks, and it's extremely complicated to take my p4 out (Alpha PAL8942 HS makes it a bitch). I'm gonna throw on a 40mm to the northbridge HS (even though it doesn't even feel hot to the touch...) and see if just maybe that helps. If not, I'm just gonna hope it's a mobo limitation and not a cpu one, because I'd much rather buy a new mobo than cpu in the future.
 
A friend of mine got a 2.4C that would ONLY do 2.4, he had an 845PE MSI board. He upgraded his board to an ASUS P4C 800-E and managed to get a whopping 2.4 out of his chip. I tried it in my IC7-G and still only managed to pull 2.4 His chip was from China too...maybe there are 2.4's that cant overclock, but hey you did pay for a 2.4

Well the 2.4C running at 2.8GHz will easily outrun your 2.4 with a 533MHz FSB.

The 800MHz FSB plus Hyperthreading will be faster. I don't know anything about that Abit board. But the board has as much to do with the OC'ing as the processor does.

On a i845E chipset board my 2.0A ran at 2.4GHz. On a i875P board that same chip ran at 2.65GHz.
