My raptor started making this weird spin up/spin down noise when my computer is on. My friends also just started making this noise, and he thinks its a defect. Im not so sure, because the drive works fine, its just annoying to hear it keep adjusting speeds or whatever its doing. Whats the deal?

The famous raptor whine. Thats the price you have to pay for 10,000 RPMs of speed.
I got a 74 one and it makes NO whine and the idle noise is excellent considering the speed. The spin up noise is really noisy though; go check your power settings, perhaps youve set it up to stop after x minutes. That would make it spin down (duh) and if in the next second something is calling for data, it will start and make noise again...

How close together are the spinups? If they're almost contiguous then the unit has issues.

Check the event viewer and see if there are any disk or paging errors showing up.
Also, run a diagnostic program - such as the one WD provides.
(just incase you don't know where the event viewer is)
Right click "My computer" -> "Manage" -> "Event Viewer" -> "System"
Well, the WD740GD has fluid dynamic bearings while the WD360GD of today does not. That makes up for the quieter operation right there. Still, it's not going to be as quiet as good 7200 RPM drives, as you pointed out.Originally posted by Voodooo
