Western Digital: Load Cycle Count: >386000

I was just checking smart data on a drive I was planning to remove. It's a Western Digital WD10EACS.

Most stats look fine except "Load Cycle Count" which is over 386000.

I have two of these drives in my system and they each have the same hours, and the other drive only has an LCC of about 6000.

A quick search shows WD had a too aggressive head parking. Yikes. I guess so. I think I will have to pay better attention to this in the future.
 
Yeah they are still doing it on their latest drives as well. Luckily the wdidle3 tool still works on them.

The aggressive head parking is ridiculous.
 
Yeah, some time back I did a consulting gig where I replaced an array which had the park time set to 3 seconds (or whatever the shortest was) and several of the drives had a few million load/unload cycles.
 
The 1t/platter seagate drives have the same problem. They relaxed the default park time slightly and made it less agressive (it made a pretty loud click before) in the most recent firmware it but still does it too often for my tastes.

Changing the APM setting seems to fix it but the drive doesn't remember it between cold boots.
