My friend as a 120gb Western Digital USB 2.0 external hard drive (model: WD1600B008-RNN)... the thing has died on him (he believes it to be the power supply or something) and wants to try to recover the data by hooking the physical drive directly to a computer...

The thing is, he can't figure out how to open the case. He says there's a lock with a K on it on the case... Anyone know how to open these things?

Aside from the question, the problem is that when he turns it on, the light just flashes on and off and then it dies.

The slot with the lock symbol & the "K" is only for a cable lock.

* Slide off the colored side panel
* On the side opposite the side panel are two rubber foot pads. the ends toward the front of the sides cover two recessed screws - take these out.
* the side with the removed side panel is held together with 3 plastic snaps - one at each end + 1 in the middle - just press in the top half of the case at these points to remove them
* now the top comes right off

inside is a standard WD1600 IDE drive

lol that's really clever on the part of WD. best way to protect your warranty policy? hide the screws under the serial number sticker. i love it.

they are glued on. you'll have to peel them off. once they're off they will probably still be sticky enough to just stick them back on, or you can use glue.
