I have a westel dsl modem through verizon. It has a lot of the functionality configurability you get on firewall routers for nat, port mapping, logs, diagnostics, etc. It has both an ethernet lan port and a usb port, the latter of which is presumably a usb ethernet interface.

Verizon says that the two cannot be used simultaneously. What's your opinions on that?

Currently I have the usual wifi router connected to the ethernet port, but am wondering about creating a 1-machine DMZ hanging off the USB port.

Usually when the provider says says their equipment can't do something, it can't. Just like when you got buy a car and they tell you it can't fly :p

They are correct- you can't use both at the same time.

verizon tells me that my cell phone cant be used as a plunger to unclog a toilet. what is your oppinion on that?

and.... the reason is?

It is set to pass 1x public IP address, either to the ethernet interface, or to the USB interface.

Hmm.... what do you mean by "pass" the public ip? The LAN devices will never see the public IP, unless you are referring to the IP it assigns to my router via dhcp.

I'm suspecting that the usb ethernet device is bridged to the internal lan, and that this device *is* a full router that simply lacks components (that might appear in different models) such as additional ethernet interfaces and wifi. Besides, the firmware appears to support this functionality.

Yes, that's correct..the LAN devices will never see the public IP. BUT..the routers WAN interface will. ;)

These are little modems used for home grade connections, usually home grade connections are single IP accounts. Business accounts use higher grade modems (or more often, modem/gateways <combo routers>) to work with multiple public IP address accounts (like if you have a block of 5x static public IPs).

Actually, the web interface "network status" page shows "connected devices" as: "Ethernet: 0 device(s) USB: 0 device(s)". Hmmm. You can have *multiple* ethernet AND usb devices?

* Turning on the router's respond-to-ping results in ethernet count to 1.

* inserting a switch between the dsl modem and router did not interrupt internet for router

* adding PC at the switch worked fine, and modem lists 2 connected devices (although the ethernet dev count is still 1)

* usb: I cannot locate the drivers (westell blames verizon and verizon.com doesn't host the driver).

So... what this means is that with a I can create a DMZ outside my wifi router using the firewall rules on the modem. Using a gigabit switch, I then can have a full GbE path for moving stuff in/out of the computers in the dmz, which is really what I wanted to accomplish. The only thing I'm lacking is being able to send WOL packets to the PCs in the DMZ, I'm not sure how I'll accomplish that.

Eliminating the switch would be nice, but there's a bandwidth tradeoff with USB.
