Something in my system makes a fairly noticeable "electrical" squeak .. i think ether PSU or around CPU socket area of motherboard is were the noise comes from though the close proximity of components in this case make it hard to tell.

This noise only happens when a realtime preview is running in Catalyst control center. It doesnt happen under any other circumstances as far as i can tell..(tryed various games and stress tests for GPU/CPU etc) And there are no signs of instability or hugely abnormal voltages/temps in the system at all ether

My first though is a bad cap/coil .. but anyone here ever heard of a bad cap/coil being this application and task specific ?

Build consists of -

Qmicra2 mATX case
Asus P5E-VM HDMI mobo
Corsair HX620 PSU
Intel C2D 6600 ES
ATI Radeon 3870
Samsung F1 1TB HD
Plextor PX760SA SATA DVDRW
Vista Home Premium

A lot of people have said that faulty capacitors are the cause of this high pitched squeak. Since it is coming on when Catalyst turns on, the faulty capacitor would probably on the video card. Take the video out and run onboard, and see if the squeaking persists.

Saw three threads on this yesterday. This happened on my X1900AIW under heavy load. Put your ear near the power connector and listen... This happens on all the high end cards. One person said insufficient power was an issue, but that Corsair should be good... Really nothing you can do about it except RMA it for another card.

The vid card in question was ran in my prior built for 3 weeks with no noise issues .. the PSU was also ran for a while in a caseless build (which was benched/stress tested) with no noise issue ether.

If I run 4 windowed instances of rtdhbl .. takeing GPU usage to 95%+ no funny noise happens .. and if this whole situation was not werid enough when I run 4 rtdhbl instances and then open CCC .. no noise happens for as long as the rtdhdbl instances are running. System has also gone though 6 hours of Prime blend with no noise to and ive played crysis etc as well guess what ? no noise.

The close confines in the Qmicra2 also make it diffactult to narrow down the source of the noise as well.

All this leaves me more then a little puzzled becuse none of it makes sense :/ and it looks like to get the bottom of it im gonna have to strip and rebuild the system a few times .. oh joy.

Yeah it looks like your going to have to take everything out and test it caseless. I still think it's a capacitor.

You sure its not one of the drives or case fans? They can make squeaks and other noises. Its even possible its the Intel hsf thats making the noise.

Well, I have some good news and some bad ..

Good: I *think* ive isolated the cause of the noise, its the PSU.

Bad: Now have a similar squeaking sound when i move the mouse in Windows, this only seemingly becomeing apparent today as i was doing further Stress/Overlock and Cooling/Fan Noise testing this evening.. I hope its comeing from the same source as the intial noise (i.e PSU) and is just an escalation of that problem as I was doing further OCing/Stress Testing..

This build has been a huge pain in the arse from component selection to my current situation(all of which would take a long time to write about heh) at the moment the system is swiched off becuse me and it are not on speaking terms right now.

In many cases the problem is a coil. Sometimes when the switching frequency is within hearing range, you can here a component vibrating. It's acts like a miniature speaker. This is not really a problem but it can be very annoying, especially when you start paying attention to it :D A bit of (hot melt) glue helps in many cases!

If you have a hard time determining where the sound comes from, you can use a little tube. A kitchen roll or a rolled up sheet (of paper) will do. Place it to your ear an try to locate to source.

Well I cant very well open up and hot glue my PSU as Ive only had it for a few weeks. And if its the motherboard thats also at issue that has solid caps/coils so cant use the hot glue method there ether .. so ether way its RMA time.

How can a mouse cause a squeaking noise problem from another piece of hardware? That one has me baffled.

Phoned retailer to obtain RMA for PSU today. Swaped out the PSU for another one I have from prior build and I am experiencing a similar noise from that PSU when useing CCC(tho not from mouse movent as yet).

Prehaps i should contact ATI about this or something ? .. as I am realy rather lost heh.
