So...yah. I'm a retard i guess. My brother got a wireless set up. He gives me the wep key. I put it in right. And it says that i connect to the router but i'm not connected to the internet. So its not giving me a ip. But its not saying "incorrrect key" or anything like that. First time dealing with wep. I just usualy do it unsecure because i don't care who uses my net... so what can i do 2 figure this shit out? iprenew isn't giving me a ip...sorry about the poor grammar. Just can't type/spell or write a coherent sentence.

Try to set your computer to automatically get an ip address from the network adaptar properties. .

I would just like to say that using WEP today is false sense of security.
Any WEP can be broken in minutes today.
Go WPA, or even better WPA2.

welll hey wise guy lol. mmmm how can i break into my brother shit then? Because its pissing me off. Right now i'm on my next door neighbors. And i told him to just take the shit down but he doesn't want to listen! maybe ill look up how to crack it just for fun.. i got time to kill :rolleyes:

what do you mean it is not giving you an IP?

what IP do you end up with

your wep key is incorrect, and you are not actually connected to the wireless network. try copy/paste the key and you should connect with an ip.

so ya....mmm. i was using the linksys software that comes with my shit. turned that off and used the windows wireless. put the same key in and its works fine.. so weird....

Oh, NEVER, I repeat NEVER use 3rd party software to configure/run a WLAN-connection...they SUCK compared to windows it self and IMHO these program should be banned by law.

Luckily, someone adept enough to bust through it wouldn't be someone interested in my network. For me it simply keeps neighbors off my network (combined with an ACL).

This subject has been covered countless times before... Please drop the fanaticism. there has YET to be a proven WEP hack in the implied timeframe of "minutes". Typically it takes an hour or more with a very active wireless network to capture from.

Yes, Wep can be cracked. Yes WPA and WPA2 are more secure, but when the average person still doesn't understnad the concept of Wifi security to begin with, there are still plenty of open AP's for the questionable folks to snag on to. I, for one, am glad the OP has at least SOME kind of security.

I wouldn't be too concerned abt what they could/couldn't see on yr network, more with what is being searched/downloaded via yr connection..

kiddie-pr0n for instance... who will get their frontdoor kicked in?

THANK you...

i've said it in earlier threads before too... i've used all the right tools and all the right methods to crack my own 128-bit wep and it was going to be on the order of weeks... a fairly simple but albeit fully manually entered key

somebody has been watching too many youtube videos of guys cracking linksys autogenerated 64-bit weps....

Ive personally cracked 128bit wep using relay-deauth in 15 minutes.... with NO end station traffic. Autogenerated vs. a made-up key has NOTHING to do with WEP's flaws, period. The flaw lies within RC4.. hence the reason why WPA implemented dynamic keys.

Yes, I agree. Keeping them "off my network" would include their ability to download things off of it. :D

Bah... A team of 3 FBI Computer Scientists. Compared to the average kid down the block who fancies himself a hacker? Not to belittle the article, but I still don't think a performance like that is going to be anywhere NEAR common on the streets. Granted the tools to do this are more common now than ever, but beyond the theoreticals, how many "hackers" are going to spend time cracking a WEP key when most likely there's 20 open network near him?

eeyrjmr makes probably the most relevant post in this thread. "Securing" your connection can/will make the difference between implication by IP and not even being in that situation...

Bollocks, I can break any WEP in <5 minuttes
hell anybody can do that, all you need these days is ONE single tool.
You really should look into it.

When the kid next door can break your WEP in <5 minutes, is not longer for the "l33t" or the "hardcore" that have no interest in your network...

And all because WEP has a piss poor design (Initalization Vector)...the next thing is that you are going to tell me that hiding ESSID and using MAC-filter also gives "safety"?

Advising people that WEP gives anyting more that false safety is bad advice...I work with this on daily basis (Network technician for an ISP) and I don't consider WEP to be anything but obsolete "security" today.

Why anyone that is capable would run anything but WPA2(AES) is mindboggeling...

i saw terminator two and how that john kid cracked his parents debit card for a 4digit pin. fuckhead wasnt even smart enough to cover his face while using the atm...

While arguing on the internet is bad form, Let's back up. Nobody said anything that can even be construed as advocating WEP. The question is not it's specific security, we all know it's crackable. That much is fact. The question is between no excryption and WEP, what do you choose? Leave it open or at least do what you can to lock it down?

Based on your responses, you've been around the block a few times. It's fairly obvious that you know what your doing. Now, how many times have you had to snag web access when while being away from known friendly wifi networks? Did you immediately whip out the WEP cracking tools, or just connect to the open network of the house next door, do your business, and go on your way?

All I'm saying is that the casual cracking of a Key is NOT the epidemic that some claim it to be. If WPA/WPA2 is available then always the stronger encryption should always be used, but not everyone has that available...
