This explains the 5800's going up. Maybe this is old news to some of you. It's new to me so I thought I'd pass it along. -Stone

CWmike writes "An offshore AMD foundry is having trouble ramping up production of a new 40-nanometer GPU, forcing PC makers to delay shipments of desktop and laptop computers, AMD confirmed today. TSMC is struggling to get up to speed manufacturing AMD's 5800 series, 40-nm GPUs, according to Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat. He added that the foundry is in full production, but so far yields are below expectation. Matt Davis, a spokesman for AMD, confirmed that TSMC is having issues with production of the chips. He added that it's not clear how far behind the foundry is on production expectations.

'The design is sound. It's just a matter of trying to get TSMC to a point where they can yield. They're feeling the manufacturing crunch,' said Davis. 'We're a little bit under yield but we're working back into a manufacturing schedule we want for these parts. TSMC can only kick them out so fast at this point.' He said that PC vendors are being affected but declined to say how many vendors are feeling the pinch or which ones. 'It's the end of the whip,' he added. '[The vendors] are going to have a hard time.'"

A post at Anandtech suggests we'll see price hikes for the 5800-series Radeons until this situation sorts itself out.

Ballin, i'm glad i've got my ASUS 5870 in my hands and for 390 shipped!

Well it looks like there also having trouble with the 5700 series as well, just look on newegg, most are sold out.

Also, the prices have gone up on them as well. The 5750 went up 5$ and the 5770 went up 10$ in this past week.

I am glad I got my 5770 when I did, it was 10$ cheaper. :D

now this just means AMD needs to get their own foundry up and running quicker so they can get rid of TSMC and let nvidia deal with them for now on..

Wasn't nvidia looking at moving to foundry and ditching tsmc?

One more reason I'm not killing myself to find these cards...

The other reason is I've been piecing my Eyefinity set up together over the past several weeks. I have the 3 LCDs now, but am still waiting on a DVI-displayport adapter to come back in stock. Also, Eyefinity still doesn't work with Crossfire. Without these two pieces of the puzzle, no need for me to upgrade to two 5870.

Performance-wise going with two 5870s would even be a step back in some situations for me. Hopefully, by the time I'm ready to buy, the cards will be back in stock everywhere and prices will have stabilized.

I agree they need to get out crossfire/eyefinity support out ASAP.

Of course if you could even find 2 cards let alone one :(

How long do you realistically expect to have to wait? 2 months 6 months?

I don't mind 2, anything over that I'll get something else or shell out more than I want to.

It's likely by mid-January, production will have ramped back up and we'll see a stable supply.

This will really cut into AMD's margins though since, by that time, Fermi will be released and they will have missed out capitalizing on the holiday season.

Will it? Nvidia uses the same foundry and Fermi is a 40nm part also. I don't see how this is good for anyone at all.

Nvidia is already missing the holidays and ATI had a chance to sell a ton of cards being first out of the gate with them. Now when volume finally increases they'll be competing with Nvidia head to head against a likely faster product.

If anything this is good news for Nvidia. Assuming they are ready to go for Nvidia's own launch.

Why is TSMC so bad with 40nm? It's not like they didn't see this change in the technology coming. I have not found a clear cut answer on why this problem even exists, only that it does exist.

Since we're making claims I will claim that nvidia's product if faster, even if only so by 10%, will demand a $100-200 price jump. Oh and you will be able to bake cookies on it.

Maybe this is a big lie to give amd an excuse to keep the supply low and demand high.

See your some how assuming Nvidia gets parts before ATI does. This makes no sense to me whatsoever. ATI was first out of the gate sure, and could use more parts no doubt. Fermi is vaporware at this point. Assuming parts are available in January for Nvidia to start selling Fermi, and somehow ATI doesn't get parts also seems a bit silly to me. We all know ATI is sitting on the 5890 just waiting for something to drop from Nvidia before it lets it loose. Add in we'll at best see 2 parts form Nvidia at launch, with unknown performance or issues I don't see how this benefits Nvidia at all. ATI is currently getting a premium for it's product's, where as even last gen stuff from Nvidia is drying up. If anything this help's ATI even more allowing them to clear out their old stock (without having to chop prices) while everyone is stuck in limbo with TSMC's issues. Call me crazy but while ATI is not going to reap the huge benefits of it's beating Nvidia to the punch with DX11 parts, what they have will sell for more and their old stock will still sell well as the choices are getting slimmer by the day. And when 40nm parts do come back in stock people know what they are getting with the HD5XXX parts, where the Nvidia question's haven't even begun to get answers. I think you will see ATI do very well this holiday season, and have the added benefit of Nvidia dropping the ball so they can clear out there old stock at current prices. Sure if they had the HD5XXX parts also they would make more, but I don't see a dire situation for ATI or it's resellers.

Prices on this 5870 cards will spike up to the point where they will be in resale over 500 - 600$.

Glad I passed on upgrading to a Crossfire capable mobo, i7 and new RAM. My single 5870 is very happy and performing extremely well all by itself. :)

If that happend I would buy a used GTX295, then wait until the final comparsion betweem ATI and Nvidia are done. I doubt it though. $450 will be the max, then massive $75-100+ price cuts a week before Fermi releases.

lol you talking like if the 5870 was some rare stamp, sure the supply is low but once the kinks are sorted they will be dirt cheap. 1 yr from today this will be in the 150s so now people having a 5870 act like they have some kind of hardware gold that will never depreciate in value that would be only true if ATI stop releasing any cards and Fermi never makes to market. Worst of all is that there aren't any games that use dx11.

My question has always been if AMD gets such little time and product from TSMC, even more so with a finished product, how does this fair for NVIDIA? I mean, they must not get much fab time at all. It seems like TSMC is holding up the entire industry, maybe this issue will be the catalyst for more options/competition.

If they can't even supply enough 5870's then how can they get out the 5970's? I didnt think the shortage would be this bad.

Just sold my used XFX 5870 on ebay for $490 shipped. Looks like it is hardware gold....They wont be $150 new in a year.....
