Well...its official...

Well I wouldn't say they haven't even mentioned anything about it, because there has been mention of a sequel. However, GameSpot is jumping the gun a little bit, before there's even an "official" announcement. You're right though, we probably won't be seeing the next installment for a year or so.
 
Could come sooner then later ... There was obviously SO much left out of the first game. Think back to all the screen shots, videos that we saw before the first one.. and how a lot of it wasn't in the final product. When playing Gears I had the feeling that a lot was removed and felt confident it was done so im preparation for a quick sequel.

Hype was WAY too large for this game to not get a quick sequel. You can likely bet the bank Microsoft told Epic to get on the sequel before launching the first one.
 
I highly doubt there'll be a "quick" sequel. They have to have time to hype the game up. And yeah, there was alot left out of GEARS, but that doesn't mean they have to rush the follow up. There will still be people buying Gears for the next year...why cut part of those profits out just to get the follow up out?
 
Isn't much of the epic team working on UTIII right now? How 'bout that PC port, too? I can't see a Gears 2 really getting much attention until those are on the shelf.

Why not? Halo 3 hype seemed to start right after Halo 2 ended, and as you can see, its still crazy... why not start the hype machine now? In a way, it has already started. CliffyB confirms Gears 2! Rein says wtf no! Gamespot says yes! Internet says what? Peter Moore says this! Blah blah blah... you know the deal.
 
And with the # of current copies sold (GoW), I am guessing we'll see an update or two to it between now and then (maps, etc).

How long was it between Halo 1 and Halo 2? I don't know if they modified the engine at all on that game...

They'll probably tweak the graphics a lil' bit. I'm not saying it'll take long to throw the sequel game together, just that it'll take a while for them to actually release said game.

That's why the sequel won't take as long..a big part of the time spent on the original was coding the engine and working out the kinks. The existing engine is still viable for a quick sequel since it is already above the competition.
 
I effing cannot stand Mark Rein. A little bit after GEARS hit, and Epic started doing interviews, Mark Rein got blasted on how bad GEARS matchmaking is, and how broken host advantage is, and this guy says something along the lines of "If you want fixed multiplayer, buy GEARS2 when it comes out.", then he goes and corrects CB when he says something about gears2? How does that even make sence?
