well, I almost did it. (almost)

I came this "-" close to selling my current Canon 28-135 IS lens and taking the plunge on some "L" glass like the 17-40L but after some hefty thinking, I decided to wait because money's tight right now and I really dont think I'd see an extra $300's worth of difference between these two lenses.

yes, I do know that "L" is supposed to be the best but I didnt like:

1. the fact that I'd maybe get $375 for my current IS lens which would still leave me to spend an additional $325 for the 17-40L.

2. I'd be losing the extra "reach" that my 28-135 IS has over the 17-40L.

-who knows, maybe one day I'll be rich enough to be able to afford both.

If you want an L lens as a compromise between the two, consider the 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. Its a much higher quality lens than your 28-135 and gives you a little more on the wide end and also its quite a bit faster. The image quality would also bet quite a step up from the 28-135.

Um Bucket did you read what he said? His whole problem was money, you just suggested a lens that is about $500 dollars more than the 17-40

Hehehe, I hear ya. The next two lenses I want are the 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L. Time to start saving pennies

Not if he wants the wideness of the 17, 24 on a 1.6x isn't very wide

actually, what I would do is this (if I could afford it)

I would buy two lenses:

1. the 17-40L

and

2. the 70-200L F4

both of them would run me like $1225 or so but the $375 from my 28-135 IS would help some but certainly not enough for now.

That's what i was going to suggest, that would be a sweet setup as long as you didn't need fast glass

You might want to wait for the reviews of the Tamrom 17-35 Di to come in. If it's like the Tamron 28-75 Di it will be be right on the heels of the L glass for a lot less $$$.

I actually had the 28-75 XR Di for a few days and kept on gettin' random "err 99" messages on my 10D so I returned it. I have yet to get the same (or any other) error with my Canon 28-135 IS lens.

that kind of left a sour taste in my mouth from Tamron lenses.

Yeah, my g/f got me the 2.0x AF Teleconverter adapter for my 10D, and it didn't want to auto-focus for crap.

Well, there are certain lenses that don't retain the AF when used with a teleconvertor.

it may have made the lens's aperture so small that the af system didnt have enough light to function properly

yup, I actually tried a different and it did the same thing.

it didnt give me the "err 99" message all the time, only sometimes which was more than enough for me to stay away from it.

oh well, I guess all cameras might be different in their own little way or maybe its just mine.

on the other hand, the salesman at my camera shop did tell me that I wasnt the first one to get that error with that lens and the 10D.

again, who knows...
