Anyone here weld? Im taking welding 101 at the local community college and its so cool! right now Im gas welding with Oxy-ace, seems to be the most usable type of welding.

what kind of welding do you do? and what have you done with it? post pics, links, anything :)

I've done a good deal of welding being in the Automotive field, but it has also lent a hand in the PC modding field. I primarily use a MIG welder using Argon for shield. Nothing large, just a small Hobart.

It's difficult to put a decent bead on real thin metals, specially when it came off of a $25 newegg case

I just sold my welder, a Hobart Handler 140. Was one of the beta testers when that model was being released about 10 years ago and was even used in some of the advertising stuff for it (ran a small shop down the street from the Hobart welding school in Troy, Ohio at the time and did a bunch of work for one of the head instructors there), but I need a 240 welder more these days. I'm fluent with brazing, mig, stick and just starting to lay a decent bead with tig. We have some nice water cooled tigs at work.

Haha, I've never used my welding skills on case modding. Back in the States I had a garage full of tools, welder and plasma cutter included. I made all kinds of big stuff, and welded stuff for my Jeep and truck. I have a Hobart 180 (220v).

My welding table (home made):

You use that table to weld on? I'd be scared of melting it with my torch  I always weld on a cement surface...you never had problems with that?

Dude thats amazing...you only used TIG?

Once you go TIG you won't go back! We do a lot of thick metal to thin metal welding, which TIG excels at. Also, we weld a lot of aluminum, so TIG is a must!

Thanks for the positive comment!

Last time I did some welding was when I was 12 or so. Haven't had access to the equipment in years :)

(Angle grinder + welder = hours of fun)

Tig welded and designed in SW. They are headers for the v10 BMW M5. The 5 into 1 collectors are really nice compared to the stock pressings.

Those look great! Did something similar for our race car. We use a 4 cylinder engine but we still did 4-2-1 collectors. TIG welding those exhaust pipes was surprisingly easy.

Did you get them ceramic coated afterward? Or are they shiny from being polished?

Yea those are coated. The odd thing is the guy that made these isn't a welder by trade so, so with some sweat and spit they're doable. He's technically a CFD guy from cranfield.

University of Washington FSAE here! but im not doing it this quarter, maybe not this year. :( i did some MIG welding for the first time this last weekend. not great, but acceptable, and very fun! i think im gonna try brazing on my casemod in a few weeks when i have some time to start it.

CFD was the bane of my existence for a while!

Very cool. I think you guys were out at Cali this summer? We had a disappointing time out there after a 3rd place finish at VIR. How'd it go for you?

we did ok considering we got a DNF in endurance. :p 17th overall. the team had to swap the engine the night before endurance due to a transmission failure, and i guess something went wrong due to making the swap so fast cuz we had an engine failure in the second half of the event. the car was really fast though, and everything had been going really well for us. it was a big disappointment cuz we were headed for top 10 at least. :/

Forgot about this thread...

Haha, no I was never worried about melting it. That tabletop is 1/4" plate steel. The entire table weighs almost 300lbs. It's not thin stuff at all. I would have preferred a 1/2" top, but there were no pieces at the scrap yard and new steel is sooooo expensive.

very cool!

anyone used a plasma cutter? I found one for $50.00!
