Weird Vista file copying problem

I haven't done any system changes or software installs lately, so I'm not sure what would have caused this. I'm trying to copy a large amount of data, around 30 GB, over to a Server 2003 file server. It is like the files time out. They will start going over to the server, but over time, the transfer speeds slows, then stops altogether, and the copying window disappears as if it finished. If I do a small amount of files, such as 20 MB, it works fine. The server in question is pretty much idle. The PC is Vista Enterprise x64 SP1, and I've disabled the IPv6 and the two Link Layer entries in the networking properties of the NIC. Any suggestions? I don't remember having this issue before on this system, and I can currently transfer files from an XP machine just fine.

I experience the same thing trying to transfer files to a usb thumb drive. It seems like the process times out.

Try using TeraCopy to copy the files... it replaces the Vista built-in file copy handler. It may also give you some features like RESUME

Is the data a combination of many small files or several really large ones? I've had similar problems before and what I've done is copy a handful at a time, like five or six gigs worth. It's not a fix, but it gets the files where they need to be.

I've tried directories of little files and they seem okay. It definitely times out with my large files, like some DVD videos over 1 GB in size, and some .iso images as well. I've tried one at a time too, with no luck.

Problem solved. I forgot to disable the QoS Packet Scheduler, along with IPv6 and the two Link Layer items in the NIC properties. I also went to add/remove features under Programs and Features, and removed the Remote Differential Compression as well.

Apparently, the problem is not solved. I was moving data back and forth to the server for a couple of days, and now the issue has some back again today.

I checked that I still had all the above things disabled in my NIC properties. Remote Differential Compression is still uninstalled, and I re-ran the autotuning disable command as well, and then rebooted. My speeds start off pretty good on large files, and then the transfer speed slowly declines, until it just drops all together. This is getting frustrating.

I'm afraid I don't have any insight into the problem, but the issue is unlikely to lie with QoS - it doesn't take bandwidth away, just allows programs to guarantee that their packets will get through via a path that can use up to 20% of total bandwidth. It doesn't have any effect unless programs ask to have a QoS path, and it never causes wasted bandwidth - just prioritises.
