Weird Video Issues After Moving: Need Help

Well, we just moved across the country and I'm having issues with my rig (EVGA 780i with EVGA 8800GTX in SLI). When I first hooked everything up, I couldn't get the display to recognize the PC (blank screen). I tried every DVI plug on each of the 8800GTX cards twice and none of them worked. Eventually I tried it again and it worked.

I then installed Windows 7 and all of my software (it had Vista on it and I had bought Windows 7 to install while the rig was in storage). After all was installed and working fine, I streamed a Hulu video. In the middle of the video, the PC locked up. I then rebooted but again the display did not recognize the PC (blank screen). I tried booting multiple times and eventually I pulled out both cards, used a can of air on them, and then reseated them. I plugged in the DVI cable and still had a blank screen so I called it a night.

This morning, the PC worked fine upon boot. So what's going on and how can I fix this? ANY HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!


specs:

EVGA 780i

2x EVGA 8800GTX (SLI)

Creative X-Fi

4 gig Corsair RAM (4 sticks)

2 x Rapters in RAID

1 x 750 Gb HD

Dell 2407FP Monitor
 
It sounds like the move may have dislodged a card. Depending on your cooling setup you may ant to check your cpu cooler.
 
I had something similar happen a few years back, however it turned out not to be video, but ram.

Had my box in the back of an SUV for 1600 Mile move from california to nebraska, only thing I can figure is that at some point during the journey it took a static discharge and fried 4 sticks of corsair pc 4200 ddr ram.

Had all sorts of issues, hard locking, games wouldn't run at all, finally turned out to just be that all the ram got fried.:mad:

thanks for the quick replies. I'm going to reboot and check my temps and then run Memtest.
 
Uhm, if you move your PC you need to reseat everything and by everything I mean, well. Everything. By not reseating you take the risk of shorting something out by creating little gaps for electricity to arc over.

It takes a whopping 10 - 15 minutes to open your case and reseat cables and cards so you might as well just rip the bandaid off and do it already. Next time before you move you can make hot glue your friend if you don't want to reseat cables. This is what some of the smarter botique PC makers do to prevent cable sepperation and to keep memory modules and such from moving in transit. Just don't get carried away and glue to the point where you can't pull the glue off when you need to.
 
well it turns out I have some bad RAM according to Memtest. It's a start! Good call Sniper!

glad you found the issue. i would still take compudocs advice and check all cables and make sure that everything is seated accordingly.
 
Oh yes, I'm doing that now. I'm unplugging all cables and replugging them back in. I reseated both video cards and my X-fi card last night so it' not a huge deal to do the cables. Then I'll put in some RAM and Memtest until I figure out which sticks are bad.

Any other suggestions?
 
Hmm I was going to suggest moving back but it sounds like you got it worked out.


Never thought about reseating after moving the computer that makes a lot of sense, I've had weird things happen to my PC after taking it across state and even across town.

Now that I think about it, this is at least the second time I've had dead RAM due to a move. Now I need to cross my fingers that Corsair will RMA it for me as my Maingear warranty expired 2 months ago.

Yeah I kinda figured that might have happend to you too. I guess from now on out when I move a computer I'll remove the ram first.

Yes, thanks again. The system seems fine now that I have removed the 2 bad sticks of RAM. It's just funny, I was convinced it was a video issue so I'm glad that you weighed in!
